Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 27, 2008 2:08 pm After waiting 1 and half months, our builder has started laying the bricks. Except it looked a lot darker than what we thought it would be. It is suppose to be Austral's slate grey. My husband said maybe it will fade, does anyone know if this is true? I'm worried we made a huge mistake and the whole house would look like a dark horse!

Maybe if i look at it often enough i may get to like it a bit more. Or hope that it fades to brown. Re: Is the bricks too dark? 4Jun 27, 2008 2:41 pm Hi Sammy,
The bricks will look different after the mortar dries completely and after they have been washed before hand over. Did you look at completed houses with this brick before you selected them? If you did I wouldn't worry too much. But if you only selected by looking at a small sample you may be in for a nice... umm....surprise. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. And umm.....no we didn't look at houses built with this brick colour. We just went by the sample they had at the brick yard. I didn't know they would 'wash'the bricks. Is it done with a chemical or water? Re: Is the bricks too dark? 9Jun 27, 2008 4:30 pm sammy Thanks everyone. And umm.....no we didn't look at houses built with this brick colour. Here's an OT question... why do bricks have holes? Couple of thoughts: - saving material and weight as modern bricks are probably stronger than older bricks but still compatible in size - more even and quicker baking as the hot air circulates through the brick probably improves the quality - better thermal properties - solid bricks tend to float when put on mortar, whereas with holed bricks the mortar squeezes up and locks the wall together better mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Is the bricks too dark? 13Jun 27, 2008 8:33 pm thanks everyone.
Paula, we didn't think about the dark mortar, hopefully it will lighten when it is dry. Re: Is the bricks too dark? 14Jun 27, 2008 8:34 pm TDL, your link don't work. Any other site you recommend? Re: Is the bricks too dark? 15Jun 27, 2008 8:56 pm sammy TDL, your link don't work. Any other site you recommend? Sorry, about that, that was a link through the site search engine which was never gonna work.....der! Go to www.thinkbrick.com.au > click on "Reference Library" 4th horizontal bar on left > do a search for "clean" on all categories > first reference will be a pdf called "Cleaning Clay Masonry" The document is a code of practice sets out cleaning methods for removing mortar residue and stains. To reduce the need for cleaning it also provides recommendations on design and construction procedures. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Is the bricks too dark? 16Jun 27, 2008 9:05 pm sammy thanks everyone. Paula, we didn't think about the dark mortar, hopefully it will lighten when it is dry. I've posted this pic before. Look at the difference between the top of the wall and the bottom of the wall, which was laid about 10 days earlier. A month later, it all looks like the bottom of the wall.
