Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Roof tiles or colour bond 2May 12, 2015 4:07 pm As a person who had colour bond roof on my last house for 30 years and a person who has paid extra for colourbond on my build soon to be commenced I would say colour bond any day in my opinion. Why? No issues with mortar falling out. Better seal. Won't crack. So much lighter than tiles so less stresses regarding weight and required support. Volume builders tend to charge extra for colour bond although it shouldn't be extra as there is a saving on roof trusses required I believe. Better if under ember attack I would think. I love the look of colour bond. All of this is subject to opinion. I am sure there will be others who have an opposite opinion. Re: Roof tiles or colour bond 3May 12, 2015 4:13 pm I've had both but prefer a metal roof. Re: Roof tiles or colour bond 4May 12, 2015 4:14 pm It'd be worth doing a search on this one.. It's an oft-debated topic, and there are quite a lot of differences. But in the end, the decision often comes down to the preferred appearance. There are differences in the type of noise you get in the rain, but with roof insulation these days it's less audible anyhow. With anticon type insulation under the sheets in particular, the metal roof noise is deadened. Longevity-wise, tiles tend to crack and fall down into valleys. Colorbond sheets can be creased by oaf-footed trades walking on the roof. Concrete tiles tend to fade after around 15 years, and colorbord after around 10 years, some colours more than other in each case. Large hail will break tiles, and medium to large hail will dent colourbond. Tiles are heavier, so need more support, but metal needs more tie-downs to stop it blowing off. It's generally easier to get external access into a tile roof by lifting tiles, which can be a good or bad thing depending on whether it is you or an intruder trying to get in. Tile will naturally vent more, allowing heat to get out and dust to get in. With heavy wind-driven rain tile roofs can leak more rain water in, but colorbond is still susceptible at the ridgecaps depending on how they are detailed. Colorbond has more options in light colours, while tile has more options in the reds. Re: Roof tiles or colour bond 5May 12, 2015 4:28 pm Awesome guys thank for ur feedback and reviews. Much appreciated think im leaning towards colourbond now. Where as before i loved the tiles look. I think theres more advantages to cokourbnd vs tiles now. ๐ Re: Roof tiles or colour bond 6May 12, 2015 4:49 pm I went tiles for the look but went Monier horizon tiles not the traditional style roof tile. Perhaps colourbond may have been a less maintence decision but I prefered the look the horizon gives me. Also I mean technology changes but I see a lot of 15yr old colour bond roofs that are very faded and chalky but also see this in tile roofs. Do you have solar on the roof, because if its not a laying defect it looks almost like someone has been walking all over the roof in the mid section of the tile (weakest… 2 1935 Thank you so much.
