Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 04, 2015 8:29 pm Hi all, I know it seems like there is one of these discussions every second day (especially from first posters), and I hate to be that guy; but I'm going to ask anyway so bear with me! Anyway, my wife and I have just got hitched and our next step is to look for our first home. We live in the south west of WA, and ideally we want to live on a few acres and build a modest dream home, but I'm not quite sure if this is a reality right now. The property on offer in the country areas around Bunbury seems to be listed (not sure how much they actually sell for) for about $250k. Now, I've seen plenty of talk online about people easily building homes for $150-200k, but I don't really know if it possible to do that in our situation. The house I envisage is pretty simple, just a rectangular box, one or two storeys, in a cottage/barn/farmhouse style (e.g. weatherboard etc), somewhere around the 150-200m2 mark (although could go smaller; I am quite intrigued by the small house movement [but not too small]). I would appreciate anyone's comments on how realistic they think this is. Plan B is to buy an established house somewhere which we would still be very happy about. Just can't figure out if Plan A is even worth pursuing at the moment. Thanks is advanced! Re: Building new: Am I dreaming? 4May 04, 2015 10:00 pm I live in Tas, so don't really know the costs of building in WA, but as most people probably tell you, building does seem to end up costing more than you expect. If you can stick to your quote exactly, then you are laughing, but there always seem to be minor changes needed. We decided last minute to add in a solar hot water system, so paid out of our pocket for that. But our biggest expense was getting our building site ready - it cost us thousands out of our own pocket to level off our block as it was quite steep, and make a bit of a driveway. Also, from when we bought our block, to now, it has been over three years. Sometimes I think how nice it would have been to just buy a house back then and we would have been living there, paying it off and making it our own by now. But building you do get your dream home (all going well of course). Our Build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=74717 For reference, this is the Austlii reference.
