Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 28, 2015 5:58 pm We are looking at building on acreage where we'd like house built back from road. Builder told us 45metres is the maximum for gas connections where you aren't charged, thereafter gas company charges you. Does anyone have any idea how much they charge for gas connections past 45 metres? Really want the house further back! (I'm in NSW). This is what we got for ours (NSW Sydney Metro with Jemena) Other important things you should know 1. For single dwelling properties: § No fee applies for the installation and connection of one standard natural gas meter up to 25m from the front boundary. § For connections over 25m from the front boundary, an Excess Service Fee of $16.50 (inc. GST) per meter fee will apply. 2. All other property types (e.g. unit, villa, townhouse, duplex) will incur Standard Connection Charges. We will advise of the applicable charges and any available discounts at the time of inspection. 3. For non standard connections, additional charges may apply. Customers will be notified of any additional charges before proceeding with the gas connection and must agree to pay these charges before we will proceed with the connection. Additional charges which may apply are: § Road Transport Authority (RTA) charges incurred for traffic planning and permits if your address is on an RTA road. § Cost of extending the gas mains to your property boundary before a standard connection can be made. § Cost of onsite construction and labour to allow meter/piping installation e.g. removal of pavers. 4. Separate network charges may apply. Re: Gas connections longer then 45 metres (on acreage) 3Apr 29, 2015 9:59 am All I can add to this is just put the house on your block where you want it to be, and get the gas line installed. You must remember that this is a one off cost, and you'll never pay any more for. Too many homes are being built right up the front of a acreage block because people didn't want to pay extra for water, gas, electricity install costs, which in the greater scheme of things are really peanuts. So put your house where you want it to go. I'm 100 metres from the road, and would really have regretted building closer to the street just to save a couple of thousand dollars. Re: Gas connections longer then 45 metres (on acreage) 6Apr 29, 2015 2:05 pm Put your house as far back as you want or allowed to. Is the gas just for cooking or are you using it to heat your hotwater too ? I was going to get gas boosted solar hotwater for here, but after much though I went for electric boosted solar hotwater, as the evacuated tubes work really well. I haven't used any electricity at all for hot water here, and just use bottled gas for the cooker top. So maybe you might be able to do the same, subject to your own personal circumstances ? Re: Gas connections longer then 45 metres (on acreage) 7Apr 29, 2015 2:18 pm for our rural property we just did bottled gas as it was for cooking and hot water. It's a weekender but we only go through 1 'big' bottle in 2 years!! And then you don't need to pay service fees (which is the killer in all utilities). Even for our current build I considered going bottle gas for the cost/utility reason. Re: Gas connections longer then 45 metres (on acreage) 8Apr 29, 2015 5:23 pm Gas will be for cooking and heating (ducted) so I assume it will heat water too. We are considering getting solar too, depends on what the costs end up been. Re: Gas connections longer then 45 metres (on acreage) 9Apr 29, 2015 5:30 pm Gas for heating the house means the only sensible option is to hook up to mains gas then. You'd be ordering a new bottle every few days, and it would be expensive that way. I'm guessing you're set with the idea of gas heating, but have you considered alternatives like reverse cycle split system air conditioning ? I had heard somewhere that gas is likely to increase at a faster rate than electricity, so it maybe worthwhile doing some further research as to your needs down the track.
