Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Double storey VS Single Storey house 42Mar 11, 2013 12:05 pm I love single storeys. For some reason I just really dislike double storeys. My reasoning isn't particularly logical - I hate the looming McMansion look that the vast majority of them have, I dislike hearing thumping around the upper floors, I just feel claustrophobic if there's a whole floor of rooms above me, I prefer nice hard floors beneath my feet so I don't feel like I'm thumping around all the time, I can't imagine stairs with little kids (have a 3 year old and a baby at the moment, I would be trudging up and down them constantly), and I don't like the layouts of most of double storeys, how the bedrooms are all clustered together (I prefer some separation between Master and the rumpus/kids rooms). I also find the designs of double storeys really hard to close off the main living areas for noise and cooling purposes (they all have really vast voids these days and flow into open living areas which look great but so impractical). The only advantage I can see to double storeys (apart from a laundry chute which I agree is AWESOME!!) is if you had a small block and you HAD to do it to preserve some backyard. But we would choose to live elsewhere if that was the case. It's all personal preference. Interesting someone said they feel safer sleeping upstairs in a double storey - I immediately think of fire, especially with little kids.
