I reckon there'd have to be a lot of variables in the design/install of shutters or sails, such that one or the other would be best depending on what you've got in mind. The other area of success was planting as this kept the low level sun off the windows. We are considering tinting our west facing windows as well but we prefer the darker tint look and would like to avoid the silver/mirrored finish type of tint (if you know what I mean)... It certainly made a difference , it also cut down the glare significantly.
