Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 25, 2008 12:28 am I am up way past my bedtime so I hope this makes sense
Choosing bricks is the last and hardest decision I have to make...PD will not let me use an Austral Brick and I am forced to go with Boral ( i know I have some sympathy out there ) Anyway so I chose a brick which I finally grew to love 'Boral Coco', cat 5 BUT it is the only Boral brick I could actually find myself wanting on my house. After a trip to Hopetuon Interiors, i was told that the cat 5 Boral bricks - Coco, Vanilla, Moss etc are no longer available due to problems with the colours etc changing when they were acid washed....great so now I am back to square 1. I can not find a brick I love, and will most likely be forced to go up to Cat 6 for a brick just to get something in the colour scheme I like, this is likely to cost me $5000+ extra, $6000 once you add in white mortar.... I got a list of all the bricks and categories from PD and when I compare them to those on the Boral website I noticed there are some not listed.....does anyone know if this means you can't use these bricks OR does it mean you will be charged higher than a category 6 for them (in which case forget it ) Even more annoying is that my s/c told me soon PD will use Boral and Austral for all their homes (Access, Lifestyle and Prestige) but just not for the time being.....its seriously making me consider delaying my build until this happens just so I can get a brick I like..... Ok realised this is more of a vent, but there is some content in here PD people might be able to help me with so I will continue to press the submit button and go to bed My karma ran over your dogma Re: PD and Bricks 2Jun 25, 2008 2:02 pm Bel,
I can sympathise with you... I know how hard it is to choose a brick.. a brick will make or break the look of your house... as far as i remember, when we were dealing with PD before, they only offer a limited number of bricks from the supplier's range. therefore, even if there are more brick colours available on Boral's website, it doesn't mean that PD will offer them to their customers. that's another bad news. anyway, good luck and i hope you find the bricks that you like! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: PD and Bricks 3Jun 25, 2008 2:22 pm Thanks for posting VJ
It was one of the things I loved about M'con - you had the choice from boral or austral. It seems ridiculous that PD use one brick company for thier higher end homes and another for their middle range Oh well, back to square 1...finding a brick I actually like from Boral My karma ran over your dogma Re: PD and Bricks 4Jun 25, 2008 3:35 pm Well I feel for you.....We only get 6 bricks to choose from, 3 are cream 3 are red from midland. They are all ghastly and mortar is cream (which looks more like yellow) and no chance to upgrade either one.
I have to go with the least ugliest one, I am worried that I am going to dislike the house and we haven't even started yet. I too, hope that you find something you like. Re: PD and Bricks 7Jun 25, 2008 4:24 pm Ahhh ok I forgot about that Vanderlay...
Yours was a cat 6 right? I think I remember the lady at Boral saying something similar, that if you choose a brick that isn't listed on the PD display you will be upgrading pretty heavily.... I might wait and see what they bring in for the new Cat 5 range of bricks since they deleted the Coco, Vanilla etc..and go from there! It is so frustrating!!! We paid about $2300 to have it. We would have been happy with about 5 different brick from Austral! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: PD and Bricks 9Jun 25, 2008 4:47 pm Me too
I think PD should really be alot more customer friendly when it comes to allowing people to select whatever bricks they choose. i am happy to pay an upgrade cost, but I think we should have a wider variety. I'm close to taking it to management, as the only bricks we wanted have now been deleted...so where to from here? Not that I think they'll care My karma ran over your dogma Re: PD and Bricks 10Jun 25, 2008 5:00 pm The explanation to us was that they cant beacuse the different companies (lifestyle, prestige) etc only have an ordering account with the one supplier - ie boral or austral. So if they had an account with one and just did the odd order with the other they wouldnt get their normal volume discounts etc and the costs would rise. As well as to differentiate the ranges.....
Seems odd how they can all of a sudden order different bricks when they have a supply problem..... Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: PD and Bricks 11Jun 25, 2008 6:29 pm Bel, you most probably don't want to hear from me, seeing as I'm building with PD Prestige....but, just wanted to say that I think Vanderlay's idea of going out to see the Boral bricks is a really good one - it's so hard to tell in Hopetoun, where you're surrounded by taps and carpets and render and roof tiles, etc,etc and in unnatural light. Or maybe you could ask which displays have one that you like (or people on here , if they're near you) and go and have a look at them "in real life"..............................(whispering) and Iove my brick.......sorry!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: PD and Bricks 12Jun 25, 2008 7:32 pm They won't let you choose because they make their money by making you pay for the privilege of having less choice. Re: PD and Bricks 13Jun 25, 2008 8:17 pm I have been to heaps of displays, gone to the Boral brick selection centre, got countless addresses of bricks I thought I liked, and then I go and see them 'in real life' and they don't come up to scratch....
So far I have looked at; Tanami, Port Phillip, Coco, Beaumonde, La Mesa, Eureka, Pearl Grey Velour and one other which I can't think of....only the Coco was what I wanted and surprise surprise it is no longer available I don't mind the bricks on the Caroline Springs Cremorne, I have been told they are a cat 5 brick but no one can tell me the colour..... If I had to choose from Austral I could pick at least 10 bricks, even worse is most of them are in cat 1 or 2!!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: PD and Bricks 14Jun 25, 2008 8:23 pm Hope this isn't seen as a hijacking comment, but so that I can follow these threads on bricks better, could someone explain which companies are the main ones in bricks - most forummers talk of 'austral' or boral', our bricks are PGH (from the standard selections): is this a different company,or an SA version of one of the big 2, or a small company only in SA??
Sorry to interupt your thread Haygwl but it wasn't worth me starting a new one with such a simple question. Re: PD and Bricks 16Jun 25, 2008 8:29 pm Boral only seem to service the east coast for bricks and pavers - according to their website. Which is strange, cause our brick supposedly came from WA. Maybe they are called something different in SA and WA. Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: PD and Bricks 17Jun 25, 2008 8:48 pm haywgl I don't mind the bricks on the Caroline Springs Cremorne, I have been told they are a cat 5 brick but no one can tell me the colour..... Hopetoun should be able to tell you which bricks that is, having said that, we got a few answer that Austral brick was used in the display house when they was first built. Something must have changed since then. Cheers Re: PD and Bricks 19Jun 26, 2008 12:41 am vanderlay Boral only seem to service the east coast for bricks and pavers - according to their website. Helyn...... Pgh is available in all states except WA. (Part of CSR group) Boral and Midland part of the same company (although we dont get the same bricks) Austral is available in all states Re: PD and Bricks 20Jun 26, 2008 8:29 am Thank you for that, Monkey upatree.
I knew we had Austral bricks here in SA although our builder builds with PGH so we had to choose PGH bricks, they have a fairly wide range so plenty to choose from. We are getting "Golden Harvest", one of the standard selections, house is currently at lockup stage, we have a manor red roof and cream window frames/gutters etc, quite happy with how the look has turned out.
