Re: Room sizes 4Apr 11, 2015 8:55 am Hi Lorri, This is one of my pet angst and the reason our minors are 4 x 4! Custom build Northern NSW viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72217 Re: Room sizes 5Apr 11, 2015 9:15 am I'd agree normal is around 3x3. I think this reflects the trend to having just one child in a bedroom. 2 bedrooms at 4x4m takes up about the room of 3 rooms at 3.5x3.5m or 4 rooms at 3x3m. It's a tradeoff between privacy and isolation verses larger spaces. Re: Room sizes 6Apr 11, 2015 9:37 am They are grand ballroom sized bedrooms these days compared to what bedrooms were done, at least in the 1980's as old house was. A queen sized bed left almost no room at all, and just enough to open the wardrobe door. A 3 x 3 bedroom leaves plenty of room, so a 4 x 4 is gigantic. Each to their own, I believe anything larger than 3.4 x 3.4 is too big IMO. In these internet days, I don't really believe you want the bedrooms too big so kids spend too much time in their bedrooms. Re: Room sizes 7Apr 11, 2015 9:55 am 3 x 3 is big enough for a queen bed and that was our guideline for our minimum bedroom size. I don't currently have kids, so one room will be guest and one will be my study. But if I did have kids, I'd read some articles which said if you have big rooms your kids will spend a lot of time in their rooms and they won't ever want to move out. Plus, it means when you have no kids, the rooms aren't taking up the whole house. I'm happy with 3x3. In my current room I have a computer, computer desk, king single bed, book case, tallboy with mirror, single door closet, rabbit hutch and a silver rack thingy... it's a bit squishy but it works. Only reason I have so much stuff in there is because I'm still living at home, and my room is both a bedroom, study and lounge. I had the same amount of furniture in my one bedroom apartment XD. So 3.1x3.0 is really quite big, what do kids REALLY need? I've never had a double or queen bed, do kids really need these? Do you want to encourage your teenagers to share their bed with someone under your roof? A single/kid single, small desk and maybe a dresser is all I would expect you need in a bedroom. Particularly as most new houses have 2-3 living areas, and a study/theatre room. Re: Room sizes 9Apr 11, 2015 10:12 am Bpratt thy is exactly why we were happy with our bedroom sizes! Our kids spend too much time in their rooms as it is and now we have some land I wanted to give them a reason to come out. Only my daughter has had a problem with the fact she won't have room for her desk in her room with a queen bed in there. viewtopic.php?t=76386 Re: Room sizes 10Apr 11, 2015 10:42 am My kid's current rooms are 3mx3m, their built in robes don't encroach on that either. I find them plenty big enough, no tv's, computers etc in their room, just a bed, bedside and large expedit bookcase! But I believe bedrooms are for sleeping in not playing in so like the snugness! Re: Room sizes 11Apr 11, 2015 2:18 pm Currently our kids rooms are 2.650m x 3.690m and I wish they were a tad bigger. In our new build they will be approx 2.9m x 3.9m. More important than the size I think though, is the layout in terms of windows and wardrobe placement. A lot of designs these days only give you one option on where to realistically place a bed. Our Custom Dale Alcock build in the Village at Wellard https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=78620 Re: Room sizes 12Apr 11, 2015 2:47 pm Personally I would prefer smaller bedrooms and much larger living areas and designated activity rooms for kids. Realistically what do you need to put in minor bedrooms? 3 X 3 is plenty big enough Re: Room sizes 13Apr 11, 2015 5:36 pm Although the norm is for a 3x3 bedroom and yes, you can usually fit everything into that space, we have gone for larger bedrooms in our build (when it eventually starts). Bed 2 and 3 will be 4.2 x 3.1 and 3.9 x 3.1. Bed 4 will be 3.1 x 3.2. I totally agree with the concept of getting the kids out of the rooms but I also want them to be comfortable rooms and better for resale. Re: Room sizes 14Apr 11, 2015 5:52 pm Yep I also went the opposite direction. I have always lived in houses with larger rooms. So I like having the space. I also like to have the flexibility to have a desk in the room for studies etc. All my rooms are master size and 3 have ensuites and the one of the common rooms can have the main entrance locked so it effectively includes the bathroom and powder room to make a forth ensuite. The smallest is 3.8 x 4.2 excluding robes but that is the guest room with ensuite. Wanted a decent downstairs guest room so that my mother or visiting family can be comfortable and if we need a downstairs master when older. My study/ 5th bedroom is 4.1 x 4 and the other common room is 4.95 x 3.81. The remaining two are bigger still. Its just the way the plan worked out and we decided to go for larger spaces than have more smaller rooms. The living areas are similar proportions so it is balanced. I am with you Roomeat, make the rooms comfortable and it cannot hurt resale. Although I am not building this to sell. I know there will be some that think big rooms are pointless and of course there will be those in favour of them. I say build what makes you happy and is within your budget and suits your needs. I have never walked into a house and thought that a bedroom was too big. Re: Room sizes 15Apr 11, 2015 6:04 pm 3.5 x 4.0 for us for the kids, but we had to fit all of the bedrooms on one side of the house, otherwise they would have been at least 4.0 x 4.0-4.5. If I had my time over, the master would be at least 5.0x5.0 . Re: Room sizes 16Apr 11, 2015 6:20 pm There seems to be a lot of people who like the small rooms, when my kids were young I liked them to play in their rooms and when they were older they liked to study in their rooms or listen to music, or I could banish them to their room when they were naughty lol. oh the days before the evil internet! Now I asked about room size as I thought the plans were cheapo ones but seems to be the rule now. Guess in my day we didn't have fancy theatre rooms, play rooms, parent retreats, etc. My spare rooms will be for visitors so need to fit a queen bed and not be sardine tin like so people can have a bit of room to move lol. Cheers Re: Room sizes 17Apr 11, 2015 6:43 pm We converted the downstairs Living and Study into a 5th Bedroom with ENS and WIR. The bedroom itself is 3.4 x 3.9. This room is essentially for my mother who lives with us. By giving her some extra space and her own ENS I actually WANT her to spend more time in there... and give the rest of my family some well deserved peace lol. Re: Room sizes 18Apr 11, 2015 7:32 pm I too think 3x3 is fine . Just make sure your robes aren't apart of that measurement . We have two bedrooms that size with double beds . Placed in th middle with room either side of the wall . I guess if I put it along side a wall I would have more space . What size beds are you looking at having ? Re: Room sizes 19Apr 11, 2015 8:46 pm Agree with Melsie. In our build the smallest room will be 3.1 x 3.1, excluding the BIR. Personally I would not put a queen bed in there to have space for some small furnishings. Kids bedrooms are 3.7 x 3.0, excluding BIR. We don't have space for a playroom so all their toyboxes will be in their bedrooms. And when they get older, their toyboxes will be replaced with study tables, I hope. Will try my best to keep computers out of their rooms. skyler *o* I have a box of quality drill bits that seem to be new but their engraved sizes covered by rust ,,,,I tried to sand them to see their sizes but still I am finding… 0 1611 put the 2 draw set directly under the cooktop and the 3 draw set either side for balance 1 1396 Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room.
