Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 06, 2015 2:38 pm If you have a colourbond roof and sarking, do the exhaust fans from your bathrooms and range hood have to vent outside? Or at the very least do you need to have some form of roof ventilation ie whirlybird? I've taken a look at the building codes and from what I can see the roof does need to be vented, but just wanted to get confirmation as the plans my builder supplied do not show or mention any form of roof ventilation. Re: Roof ventilation with colourbond and sarking 2Apr 06, 2015 4:04 pm Its my understanding (in WA anyway), that any WC or bathroom that does not have an opening window needs to vent to the outside (not just roofspace). Personally I think any exhaust fan should to remove odours, damp etc. Surely you'd especially want your rangehood exhausted out through the roof rather than risk (even if its an unlikey one) small droplets of fat or sparks from a cook top fire getting sucked up through your rangehood into your ceiling? For me, the cost of venting to the outside wasn't much more and totally worth your money. Re: Roof ventilation with colourbond and sarking 3Apr 30, 2015 7:29 pm Thanks for the reply. I completely agree with you, which is why I'm wanting it to vent outside. I'm just wanting to know if it is something the builder must do (rangehood and a whirlybird) or if it is something I have to do. I would've thought it would be something the builder has to do as the roof will have no ventilation otherwise. Re: Roof ventilation with colourbond and sarking 4Apr 30, 2015 7:58 pm A colorbond roof does vent a little bit, around the corrigations at the top and bottom of the sheets, but it is better to vent the exhausts out anyhow. I think the reqirements vary with state, and I don't think builders here in SA think they need to do it. Re: Roof ventilation with colourbond and sarking 5Apr 30, 2015 8:46 pm our exhaust fans from bathrooms and laundry seem to vent out to under the eaves. At least there is a corresponding vent in our eaves for every one of our exhaust fans! We have whirly birds as well but I believe they are only for roof space heat etc. We're in Sydney. Re: Roof ventilation with colourbond and sarking 6Apr 30, 2015 9:49 pm Thanks guys. If anyone knows what the regs are for Victoria that would be great. I've had a look and I'm a little unsure if it is a requirement to have some sort of ventilation for the roof space. Building Standards; Getting It Right!
