Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 25, 2015 10:50 am Hi, we have built a single storey before and learnt a lot from that. We are about to start building a 2 storey this time and were wondering what people would recommend as the must have upgrades for a 2 storey house. A balcony was our must Our build thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70984 Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 4Mar 25, 2015 11:48 am Laundry chute, stair light and zoning for AC/Heating. Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 5Mar 25, 2015 12:36 pm I echo under stair storage! I actually had high ceilings on both levels too, 32c lower, 30 upper, which I always think is worthwhile. Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 6Mar 25, 2015 12:37 pm Include a light switch at both the top and bottom of the stairwell! Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 7Mar 25, 2015 12:47 pm A straight staircase. Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 9Mar 25, 2015 7:58 pm Shower downstairs (kinda wish we did this) coz when we get real old we can stay on the ground floor level. I'll be dragging my sorry but upstairs when I'm 90 now Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 10Mar 25, 2015 8:05 pm Yep, would have to agree shower downstairs and well designed staircase ie treads and risers so you don't hate going up and down. Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 11Mar 25, 2015 8:50 pm bashworth A straight staircase. I have spent many hours wrestling things like mattresses around staircases that are 'U' Shaped over the years! ...or if you must have a U shaped, have at least 1200mm wide stairs and landings, you can get mattresses and couches up stairs this wide. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 14Mar 26, 2015 2:17 pm Get your ground floor light points sorted. Even if you're just putting in bayonet points and replacing these after handover, it's much easier than trying to chase a wire thru the ceiling cavity! Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 15Mar 27, 2015 10:00 am Thanks everyone for your input, much appreciated! Re: Double storey build - what are the must have upgrades 16Mar 28, 2015 10:06 am I agree with everyone's suggestions. Unfortunately, our builder wouldn't allow us to have a laundry chute...but that's when kids come in handy to take the hamper downstairs! A two way light switch is a must. No point turning off the lights downstairs and going upstairs in the dark to bed. Under stair storage has been a life saver! Christmas tree and boxes of decs, wine, clothes horses, rolls of wrapping paper and excess tiles all live under there and out of sight. Oh, and sometimes the vac cleaner. Make sure you get a light and a power point under there, it can be a good place to store and charge a dust buster. Our patch panel is also in there. If you don't have ducted vac, make sure you put a power point close to the stairs so you can easily vac up them. Insulation in the ceiling between the floors if you can (we couldn't). If you're having hidden plumbing from upstairs through downstairs wall cavities, sound insulate around them. As much as I love my U shaped stairs (easy to put the vac on the landing when you vac around the bend!), we recently took two large couches upstairs...and it was a nightmare! The queen sized mattress was easy compared! We ended up with dents in the wall, squashed fingers and a busted wall light fitting...and lots of swearing! BUT....when you fall down the stairs, you only fall half way, not a full flight! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!!
