Unfortunately, our builder wouldn't allow us to have a laundry chute...but that's when kids come in handy to take the hamper downstairs! A two way light switch is a must. No point turning off the lights downstairs and going upstairs in the dark to bed. Under stair storage has been a life saver! Christmas tree and boxes of decs, wine, clothes horses, rolls of wrapping paper and excess tiles all live under there and out of sight. Oh, and sometimes the vac cleaner. Make sure you get a light and a power point under there, it can be a good place to store and charge a dust buster. Our patch panel is also in there. If you don't have ducted vac, make sure you put a power point close to the stairs so you can easily vac up them. Insulation in the ceiling between the floors if you can (we couldn't). If you're having hidden plumbing from upstairs through downstairs wall cavities, sound insulate around them. As much as I love my U shaped stairs (easy to put the vac on the landing when you vac around the bend!), we recently took two large couches upstairs...and it was a nightmare! The queen sized mattress was easy compared! We ended up with dents in the wall, squashed fingers and a busted wall light fitting...and lots of swearing! BUT....when you fall down the stairs, you only fall half way, not a full flight! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!!
