Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 22, 2015 12:06 pm Hi guys. In process of starting to build a house, been to prestart a few weeks back. Already having problems with my builder regarding going hobless showers so I did some research on rules and regulations and asked a couple of plumbers regarding this and got a quote for a reflux valve. Thought I should make a post about it because my builder is trying to rip me off and hope this helps other people who are in the same situation. Firstly, yes if you go hobless shower you have to install a reflux valve to your main sever connection to prevent back-flow of sewage from the main line in the street if there is a blockage. The cost of the valve it self is $320 inc GST from Reece plumbing and this is retail price. There is nothing hard about installing it, it's joints are made from normal PVC piping and gets easily glued to the main sewage pipe between the house and the main line in the street. You only need one of these valves per house hold and not per shower like my builder is trying to convince me. This sort of thing should not cost thousands of $$ to do so if your builder is telling you something different they are trying to rip you off. My builder wants $2000 per shower and I have 2. Temich Re: Hobless shower and reflux valve 2Mar 22, 2015 12:30 pm If your house is in an area that reflux is a problem that should have already been taken into account , can't they achieve enough Height difference between the shower outlet and the overflow relief gully ? Re: Hobless shower and reflux valve 3Mar 22, 2015 12:57 pm What I have found out is that The (ORG) overflow relief gully should be 150mm below the overflow level of the lowest fixture or the grate of a floor waste and if this 150mm hight can't be achieved a reflux valve has to be installed. The problem is that the builder does not want to tell me how much lower the ORG is from the drain in the shower. I am trying to get this info out of them but trying to get any sort of answer out of my builder has been hard and they always say we don't know or they simply give misleading info and say that rules and regulations say that when in fact they don't. I will not be letting this go because it's simply unfair. Hope this thread helps other people building. Re: Hobless shower and reflux valve 4Mar 23, 2015 8:28 am You have the same problem if you want to install hand spray bidets as well. Most of the places I asked around wanted to install it per toilet and costs charge you close to a thousand. There's also the annual inspection of the valve by the council as well which costs you bit more money. Re: Hobless shower and reflux valve 5Apr 03, 2015 8:42 pm Shdowarrior we just spent 4k for 3 bidets hand sprays for this same reason. Such a rip off. How does this happen (e, will the council get in touch or do you need to initiate it? And do you know how much it cost? Is it the same throughout the country? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks Re: Hobless shower and reflux valve 8Apr 06, 2015 12:33 pm @Monalisa, yes, can feel your pain. The odds of the problem happening is 1 in thousand, but just because it can happen, there is the clause by the council to classify Hand Bidets as High Hazard for backflow. One way to counter this is to pre-plan. Tell the plumber before he sets out the pipe layout that you want all your toilets supplied with water from the same supply line isolated from the rest of the supply lines. And then install the RPZD and PLV on that supply line. @Malsannie, check with your local council or their website about regulations regarding backflow prevention. Brisbane and Gold Coast (Queensland) council requires you to perform annual inspections on the PLV and RPZD at the owner's cost via a certified plumber and then forward the test results to the council within 10 business days. Costs around $100 from my memory. Doesn't have anything regarding reflux valves though. Good luck with it. I don't know what the cost of a nice bidet seat with a 25mm air gap will be but you are obviously deducting the cost of a RPZ valve and its… 9 6983 First time building 2 storey home, is under construction (in Framing stage) in NSW.
