Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 06, 2015 9:22 pm Hi...I am considering ditching the garage in the display home plan and having a carport out the front instead. It means I can use the would be garage for an activity room, and reduce the size of the house on the block so we get more garden area. The house is in the western suburbs of Perth and generally new houses have garages. I don't see why Perth homes need a garage as we don't have extreme cold/snow so there's no frost/ice on windscreens to deal with. Any reasons why we should definitely go with a garage? I also think a carport will have a better look at the front as I don't particularly like the look of a large garage door. Re: Carport or garage? 2Apr 06, 2015 9:56 pm The western suburbs and their character filled homes are littered with carports! As long as it's design is in keeping rather than some el cheap variety then I can't see why not! Re: Carport or garage? 3Apr 06, 2015 10:08 pm I live in Nedlands and we have a carport as do most of the homes around us, the only homes with garages are the brand spanking new homes. I agree most of the old homes have carports but as I walk around Dalkeith and closer to the river all the new homes have garages. Re: Carport or garage? 5Apr 06, 2015 10:41 pm No I wish I could afford to stay in Nedlands! I've lived in Nedlands for 23 of my 24 years and will be sad to say goodbye, I am building in Mandurah. You can always put a door on a carport still. I'm also leaving Nedlands as all the newcomers have pushed up the prices! Not going too far though.... And looking forward to a change! Don't think The council allow doors on carports if I want to have the carport closer to the verge than the allowable building distance of 6m from road. Re: Carport or garage? 7Apr 06, 2015 10:54 pm Oh ok damn, maybe a sliding gate?? I'm pretty sure you can also have a door if it is see through? It will be, we have a great location and we are able to build a home we couldn't if we were closer to Perth, but I still love the Western Suburbs life style and i'll miss being close to everything. Where abouts are you looking to build? Our build thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70984 Re: Carport or garage? 8Apr 06, 2015 10:58 pm I'd go for a garage personally. More storage (pull down attic in ceiling?), more security (cheaper insurance purposes), I also think it's an expectation these days that homes in city suburbs have garages. Re: Carport or garage? 9Apr 06, 2015 11:46 pm Yep carports are not allowed to have closed in sides or doors if they do then they must comply with set back rules. I think its horses for courses. I want a garage because I do not want everything on display and I want a gate. It sounds like you have a crack in your garage where the wall meets the ceiling, along the shadow line on the… 0 17197 isn't a garage level with the rest of the house a given? pretty sure they 'came around' long time ago. if you have a flat block, the garage is usually level with the rest… 1 17525 |
