Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 21, 2015 9:19 pm Hi all, Having a bit of a conundrum with our Cinema/Lounge set up. For a number of reasons, we have to have the TV set up against the Study wall (rather than against the ensuite wall). I'm trying to decide whether or not to remove the small window and centre the larger window in the room, or leave it all as it is? I'd like to have more windows, but I feel it would look strange having a large TV mounted on the wall with the window next to it (off balance?). Just an aesthetics thing. Husband thinks it would be fine. What do you think? If you remove the small window you could have a bigger study, not sure why the alcove? I'd centre the large window but that's just me Custom build Northern NSW viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72217 Re: Window conundrum...to leave or remove? 3Mar 21, 2015 9:49 pm TraceyWayne Hi JP79, Out of interest where's north on your block, trying to work out the orientation of the windows. Not too sure why the alcove either, but I don't mind it. If we extended the study, then our house 'just' tips over the 60% allowable coverage Re: Window conundrum...to leave or remove? 5Mar 21, 2015 9:59 pm Fair enough about the alcove and just realized there's a matching window in the dining. Good point from Joshwaaaa if you're just watching movies, is it a warm climate where you are, if yes leave it for ventilation if not take it out, then room for huge TV haha, good luck! That also gives you the opportunity to have shelves/storage either side of your TV! Re: Window conundrum...to leave or remove? 8Mar 21, 2015 10:10 pm As for the alcove you might find it is a design necessity, some councils have length limitations per wall so need walls to step in or out to cover an entire length of a house. Re: Window conundrum...to leave or remove? 10Mar 22, 2015 7:35 am Thanks everyone! Completely forgot that we've flipped this design, so that window is actually north facing. I'm no good with the whole orientation thing and whether or not it's good to have more or less windows etc. I get that you should have all of your living rooms facing North or West if you can, hence the flip. I think removing it and centring the other window is the way to go. Re: Window conundrum...to leave or remove? 11Mar 22, 2015 8:32 am Reasons to keep it:
These reasons are mainly relevant if it's to be a multi-purpose living space. If it's only to be used as a theatre, then it may be better to feel more a darker and closed space - which is probably better achieved without the window. I'd only worry about the symmetry of the wall if you plan on keeping the furnishings symmetric. Looking at the plan I'm wondering why you don't have an internal door to the garage? Re: Window conundrum...to leave or remove? 12Mar 22, 2015 9:22 am Thanks oneJohn. All points that I've been struggling with. We're building in SE Melbourne for those interested. Oh, and we do have an internal garage door. I just quickly grabbed the floorplan from the builders website (sorry, was being lazy). Re: Window conundrum...to leave or remove? 13Mar 22, 2015 10:27 am I think it comes down to what you're using the room for JP79. If you're planning on using it as only a home theatre room, get rid of it. If it's more like a second living area that will be multi-purpose, keep it. Don't worry about the aesthetics of it - you can offset it on the other side with a tall floor lamp or art work or vase or something.
