Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 04, 2016 3:24 pm My PCI is next week and I am honestly just over the whole building process. I've been reading this forum for a while now and am so envious of those people who have great builds - great site supervisors, great contractors, great work and a house they love.
I know I chose the wrong builder and am regretting it now. They seemed to have good reviews but when I look at the review website now I see that all the positive reviews are left by reviewers who have only reviewed one product - their homes, hmmmmmm. At the start it all seemed good - the sales rep did his job and got me to sign up. The process declined after that - rude and disinterested colour consultant who made numerous mistakes. The site supervisor obviously has too many sites and can't keep on top of his work. The contractors have delivered poor quality work. I am dreading PCI as I know the crap will hit the fan and the excuses will be flowing thick and fast - they have already started. I am just so fed up with all the issues and excuses. One big problem I have with my builder is the lack of samples they provided with my colour choices and also how they change names of products from that of the supplier. This has resulted in $3000 worth of the wrong coloured carpet being laid. And of course it's all my fault. Out of curiosity would you consider a carpet called 'Silver Spoon' to be grey or brown? Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 2Jan 04, 2016 3:30 pm Once you move into your home you will forget ever building it and all the stress that came with it, you're so close to the end I don't regret building my home but the process was very long and tiresome and the stress caused health issues but now we are in, I don't even think about it anymore. Our build thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70984 Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 3Jan 04, 2016 5:07 pm I am not regret building a new home. Actually I am enjoy every bit of it. I did have a nightmare when my Mum and Dad build their home with Statement Homes (BGC). Full of Bull dust that company. Delays, BAD quality of works. When I was start looking for a builder for my home, I when to lots of display homes, any builder that belong to BGC( Perception, commodore homes, etc) I just when in for a look and walk out did not even border to talk to the sale person. I nearly went with Don Russel homes, but I knocked back because they took 2 weeks to explain why they charged me $16k over the base plan and what are included in the drawing. In end I went with Atrium Homes. I picked the right builder a little bit more expensive, but the work are qualities, organized, respond to my concern very quick and understanding. My PCI estimation date will a round March 2016. I usually hope Christmas will be a bit longer but this Christmas I wanted it to go quick so my builder return to work . I WANT MY HOUSE BAD Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 4Jan 04, 2016 7:03 pm You poor thing. It's all so stressful. It'll get better and worst case you can sell it if you hate it. Take care and hang in there Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 5Jan 04, 2016 7:56 pm I would expect something called Silver Spoon to be Grey. 100%. Having said that I always cross-checked everything so I didn't run into any surprises. Unfortunately you have to be over the top of them and all over every decision as, quite simply, the builder doesn't have as much emotional investment in the house as you do. They probably can't see the big deal if a colour is a shade wrong, they think it looks fine. To us it can seem like a slap in the face every time we walk in the front door. I know when you sign up you want it all to go smoothly but I can guarantee you there is not a single house on this planet that has been built without a hiccup or two (or 500!). I feel for you but please know that every build (at least most) is tough. It's just that some of us thrive on the stress and enjoy the dynamic nature of the build and challenges and fix-ups, others just aren't cut out for that stuff. And that's okay. We're all different. Just focus on the end result. Pick your battles. Ask yourself "will this little defect bother me in 10 years' time?" If the answer is yes then fight for it to be corrected, if not just let it go, it isn't worth the hassle and the stress Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 6Jan 05, 2016 1:06 am OllyOllyRumbah My PCI is next week and I am honestly just over the whole building process. That's sux Where are you building Silver spoon is say grey but some greys can look griege (grey brown) ? Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 7Jan 05, 2016 9:28 am We have done a KDR and it's been pretty stressful. Our PCI is coming up also and we have so many things that need to be fixed first. Things we should not have had to worry about. If things go well and get fixed we will be happy with our new home and hope the stress of it all will be a distant memory soon but if they don't help or fix what we ask then it could be a hard few weeks coming up. Sometimes we wish we just sold and moved rather than built Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 8Jan 05, 2016 7:57 pm Ditto but if you have a good block in a great suburb, a KDR is the way to go. We had big problems even getting a planning permit approved and many times I asked if it was worth it. But when it came down the crunch I love where we live........don't worry we will all be OK??? Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 9Jan 05, 2016 8:57 pm Agree with you Bjhf. Hang in there Olly, stand your ground if you have to (pick your battles ... For things that will bug you In 10yrs time - great advice!) And if you feel the need to battle, be firm but fair ... You will be respected for that. We had structural problems that we felt we had to fight to rectified. It all turned out good in the end and we are super happy. Things go awry because it's a huge logistical and communication project. But things can always be fixed. Just better if done right the first time. Almost impossible considering the number of people involved. All the best. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 10Jan 05, 2016 10:31 pm I totally agree. We are in the middle of a nightmare too. But once they get you to sign all bets are off and they have you over a barrel. I will be angry if my house take that long. I was a bit angry when they have a delay around 4 weeks after slab down on 26 of Feb 2014, my house reach lockup on 10 of December 2015. They normally leave the slab to cure for 4 weeks before laying bricks. The longer they leave it the better Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 14Jan 06, 2016 10:59 am Sorry to hear your not enjoying your experience ;-; I'm half and half, I love being able to design my house, but the stress is getting to me. My land hasn't even settled, but I'm pretty over it already. I really like my builder, but everything seems to take longer than I expect. I just want this build contract done and dusted and for things to get moving. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 15Jan 07, 2016 10:02 pm perthgirl16 I totally agree. We are in the middle of a nightmare too. But once they get you to sign all bets are off and they have you over a barrel. Agree 100%. My carpet battle continues - this is one stuff up I feel very strongly about. Paying nearly $3000 for carpet that is ugly annoys me. I just found out the carpet company offers a 30 day replacement guarantee for reasons such as the colour doesn't match your furniture or you don't like the feel of it under your feet. I have been in contact with one of the owners of this company but he failed to tell me about this guarantee. Considering the carpet I selected isn't even close to what was installed - I selected dark grey and a light brown has been installed, let's see if the guarantee applies to me. Staff at my builders are fobbing me off and before Christmas the carpet company owner was more than happy to help but now he wants nothing to do with me and won't return my calls or texts. Hi Archetto Too many stuff ups to forget and an ugly coloured carpet that doesn't match the rest of the house will be too hard to ignore. Picked one of WA's supposedly best builders (DAH) and 4 years out we're still fixing their stuff-ups[/quote 4 years later and you're still fixing their stuff ups? What did they stuff up? That's been going on for too long. I also picked a builder in Qld that apparently has a good reputation but did I get that wrong. Looks like I'll be off to QCAT for my problems if Fair Trading can't sort it out. And I'm not even in my house yet. Am getting independent inspectors in. Does anyone know if electrical inspectors exist? Can they inspect electrical work after completion? How did they install the wrong carpet? I mean I assume you picked the carpet, and signed off on it. I'm on my 3rd build atm and it's easy to automatically blame the builder but it's a contract, you need to read it, double check every single choice you made and yes despite that, you'll make mistakes but 99% of those mistakes get forgotten after you move in.
