Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 13, 2015 2:01 pm Hey everyone, We bought a block 528sq m (16*32) and are in the process of picking a builder and floor plan. My question is what do people consider a decent size backyard to be? Most house plans we are looking at leaves only 3 meters at the back of the house. Do you guys reckon that it is a decent size for a family (2 adults +2 kids)? Re: The backyard conundrum 2Mar 13, 2015 2:29 pm Hi Divs we are building on 500sq (15.1x33.1) we will have a 5.6m backyard & 4m down one side. We are also 2adults & 2kids. House is 23m long x 11.9m wide. 4bed, 3living, 2car. I think what you need to look at is either a wider house that is shorter or thinner house that is longer & use one side as backyard. I personally think that 5.6m from house to fence is small for 2kids but thought it would be ok having another 4m down 1 side. We have 1m clearance down blind side. Re: The backyard conundrum 3Mar 13, 2015 2:30 pm Hi there, most councils require more than 3m at the rear of the block, or you may be under the Residential Code which I believe is 4m. (just something to look into and consider) Do you have parks etc. nearby? Do you want space for an outdoor entertaining area? Do you want space for a shed? Where is the house located, what is the norm for your area? I have seen houses listed for quite some time now that are still sitting on the market, they have built the maximum size house possible, with minimum outdoor area. Good luck! As far as i knew a 500 block is a R20 code unless it has a detailed area plan that changes the code which means the house has to be 6m back from the front and this house isnt, R30 code is 4m from the front (drive 4.5m) so my house is 4m at the front and 5m at the rear as its only a 450m block but it seems like builders just stick the house on were they choose and council never looks at it. i know this happens as my building used the wrong r codes drawing up my house and council approved it. heaps of people in our area have breach convents and from what im told it's only when someone lays a complaint do they look into it and then you have to fix the error.
