Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 03, 2015 12:21 pm Hi all, I'm half way through my build (walls are up) and it's only just occurred to me how bizarre the positioning of my meter box is. It is currently in the entry way to the front door - For some reason I just didn't pick up how claustrophobic this would make the front doorway feel. I am thinking of asking my builder they're able to change the box position to the other side of the wall (ie garage wall). Would this be a good idea or look more bizarre? The meterbox has not been connecting but some wiring has been put through the walls already, so my only options are likely leave in position or move to the opposite side of the wall. There appears to be Pros/cons for either position, ie it is more hidden in the entry way but is also not the best look when guests arrive (it feels very squished). Existing position is shown in the drawings/elevations below. My thoughts on where to move it is shown in red. Is this a good idea? I realise the builder will charge me for this (or possibly say no) but I'd rather fix it now if it's potentially something that could have been fixed. I feel like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't. Technically I won't see it in the entryway during day to day life as I'll mainly use the entry from the garage (this is likely why the meterbox is in the entry way as standard). The front door would only be for when I have guests around. If I can't be confident that moving the box is any better than where it is now I think I'll just leave it as is. But I'd love some opinions (particularly if anyone has faced something similar on a narrow block?) Re: Meterbox position on narrow block 5Mar 04, 2015 11:26 am Hmm, I'm not a huge fan of either option but I see you have little choice due to your zero boundaries. Is the meter box able to be easily camouflaged? If so I'd be tempted to move it out of your front entryway and onto the garage wall. But of course that option affects the facade of the house more. On balance I think I'd go with the move as Beazley77 has suggested. Re: Meterbox position on narrow block 6Mar 04, 2015 11:36 am Either option is not ideal, however I think the garage wall would be better than in your porch, especially for moving furniture in and out, it limits your space that little bit more, the garage wall is a bit more out of sight at least from inside the house. Our build thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70984 Re: Meterbox position on narrow block 7Mar 05, 2015 9:32 am Higher up may be ok too but I know our one was in built so there was a cavity for it so could be difficult to move. Re: Meterbox position on narrow block 8Mar 05, 2015 1:38 pm Thanks all, I've asked the builder if they can have it moved so I await their feedback (and price). Yeah my meterbox is inbuilt into the wall so some work would be involved cutting/chiselling out bricks and then reinstalling it the other side. I would say higher up would pose other issues in that the meters cannot be easily read? Just guessing. I'd like to think the price won't be too high. The walls will be ultimately be rendered (ie the finish on the bricks doesn't need to be great). I don't see it being any more than ~4hours work for a decent brickie to complete. At most I'd expect 4hours @ $75/hr (dayworks specialised labour) = $300+GST. But we'll see. Re: Meterbox position on narrow block 9Mar 08, 2015 12:23 pm Ive seen this at another house near mine and i stopped and looked for a minute thinking it did look a little.bizarre having a meter box in the entry way! Id have the builder move it. Re: Meterbox position on narrow block 10Mar 08, 2015 2:20 pm I've seen a house with one right at the front of the block separate to the whole house. Not sure how they did it and if it's suitable for you situation but it might be an idea. Good luck. dimensions on your original plan are inconsistent and with accurate dimensions (including site plan, upstairs and down) i could make a proper scale drawing with furniture… 3 7517 Thanks again for this information. If you do hear anything different, would be great to know 4 8242 So it looks like we finally have some movement on site! Definitely later than expected, but I'll take any progress at this point. I'll drop by over the weekend to get… 5 27713 |
