I have recently posted in whirlpool.net.au my slab stage as I had some concerns that were apparently well founded and it was suggested that I post here for some more expertise on the issues.
Note that I have already paid for the slab stage ($33,018) and it was suggested that I go and hire an independent building inspector on the whirlpool forum.
I'm in the process of having my house built. We have just had our slab works completed. I have a couple of concerns and was hoping that there would be someone familiar with building that could assist .
My main concern is that on one side of the slab, near a wet area, there appears to be some fabric, wood I think, embedded in the slab itself. From my understanding it's possible that when they poured the slab they may have used wooden frames to capture the pour until the cement had hardened enough to keep its shape and when removing the frame some wood snapped off and dried in with the cement. Really not sure about this, it looks a little tacky.
Thinking worst case scenario, it may impede the integrity of the slab and consequently any future modification of the slab – I.e. when bricks go up.
I have some photos below.
There is also some iron mesh sticking out of the slab or next to it – but this seems fairly common.
I wish I was a builder...
