Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 19, 2015 9:42 pm Can somebody give me the required building standard for the reduced level slab for the garage floor on a waffle pod construction? Is is ok for garage floor to be waffle pod construction with a 85mm slab top or does the garage floor have a different construction requirement re thickness of the slab top or any other requirement? I have the option on my coin in my contract with Simonds for slab upgrade regarding waffle pod thickness and/or steel upgrade. For my 25 sq single storey house with RL Alfresco and RL garage waffle pod slab to go from a 85mm thick slab to a 100mm slab I need an extra 3.3 cubic metres more concrete and I am unsure if steel needs upgrading for the extra 15mm thickness in the slab top. Non of this upgrade is priced with Simonds Homes at this stage. Our soil tests and land survey due in next few weeks. Any opinion or qualified discussion re this issue is much appreciated. Garage RL waffle pod slab 2Feb 20, 2015 3:41 pm Standard or not IMHO no less than 100mm for garages and driveways and definitely no waffle pods. Re: Garage RL waffle pod slab 5Feb 20, 2015 8:23 pm So it's just a preference thing? I thought maybe you had heard some bad stories or something; waffle pod building around here having seemed to have been pretty common for at least 25 years I guess I'd expect to have seen some garage cracking or heard of such problems if problems were common ... ? I'll have to break-out the engineering drawings for the shed, where I asked for a reinforced floor for a two-post hoist. I think the concrete was still the same thickness but the pods are smaller (ie. the thicker concrete 'ribs' are closer together than for the house) - but would need to check to be sure. Re: Garage RL waffle pod slab 7Feb 21, 2015 6:55 am insider what area are you in and have you considered a raft slab instead Simonds Home would only build on a waffle Pod slab but our soil test not yet done. I wanted a raft slab but after research, waffle pod will work but I have to have it protected from water, I am prepared to do that protection with excellent drains and a concrete apron around entire house. I am building in Wollert Melbourne in Aurora estate in highly reactive clay soil. Re: Garage RL waffle pod slab 9Feb 24, 2015 3:16 pm Forg So it's just a preference thing? Not just a preference thing in my opinion. I don't really have a problem with waffle pods for the main house, but not for a garage due to weight carrying and stability concerns. I'm sure there's some engineering spec somewhere that allow for waffle pods in garages but some of the minimum standards are not good enough for me. Also I am doing 150mm reinforced where I'm putting my hoists;) The Soil classification has little to do with piers.
