Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 15, 2014 12:55 pm I need some help with sugestions, We are so lucky that we have been offered a awesome house present by my step dad. Either crimsafe fitted to the entire house or ducted air conditioning. ... I initially thought crim safe so we could leave windows and doors open, but now im thinking aircon, we have a young family and would probably not be able to afford either for a few years. I know there will be a bit involved with running cost with aircon we should be able to afford it.....hopefully. so many unknown factors, will it be too hot for kids to sleep with no aircon, will we be able to afford to run the aircon. .. any help much appreciated. We are building in spearwood. We get the keys in Jan. We had ducted in a 3x1 our electricity bill was approx $350-$400 per quarter. Family of 3 at the time on the central coast. Re: Need help, crimsafe or ducted air conditioning??? 6Dec 15, 2014 1:51 pm We had ducted reverse cycle AC in a 4x2 (although it was only ever used in two zones). Power bills were always above $800. Even though we can afford this I don't want bills this big - hence why we are going evaporative in the new place. My way of thinking if money was to become tight I would rather be able to have evap on 24/7 than have a ducted reverse cycle system that I couldn't afford to switch on. Just my 2c Re: Need help, crimsafe or ducted air conditioning??? 7Dec 15, 2014 2:01 pm crim safe is overated. You can deter criminals in a anumbe rof other cheaper ways. Go Airgon. Its usefull and you can feel the efects of it when you need to use it. as to bills? Depends how often you use it, how big the system is (and whethe rit is a suitable size for your home), what the comfortable temperature is for your family, how well insulated your home is, how open your areas are, do you have solar to help offset some of the cost etc. Evaporative can be too "wet" for some people and doesnt to well in high heat or humid environments. SO a heatwave of 40 degrees in melbourne, you can forget about it doing anything usefull. Creator of superduperonium, expert at expert things, nobel laureate, can hold my breath for 10 minutes. Re: Need help, crimsafe or ducted air conditioning??? 8Dec 15, 2014 3:15 pm ducted air con cost too much to run thats why im putting in spilt systems and doors so i can shut off areas to keep costs down. i had 2 spilt systems at the last house and was paying around $300 per power bill for a large 4x2. if you could have ducted evap (cost around $5k) with 3 crimsafe to key areas as you need to have windows open to run an evap system which hopefully wont cost more than $5k as most reverse cycle AC cost $10k or more to install. remember evap doesnt do heating though, anyway food for thought. Re: Need help, crimsafe or ducted air conditioning??? 9Dec 15, 2014 9:50 pm Like dannislade said, go split systems for the same reason. I've gone that way myself. Depending upon your location, you may find evaporative effectively useless. If building, get your a/c guy in to pre-install the piping to all the locations for the split systems, even if you may not install a unit for a couple of years. Ceiling fans can be a good stop-gap until you get all your a/c's installed. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld.
