Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 12, 2014 5:10 pm Hi All, anyone have experience building with an independent/small builder? We were going with Henley however due to price and frustrations with service, we have started to reconsider. we've been approached by an independent builder (partners client) to spec our plans. He is a commercial developer (schools/apartments) and recently moved into the residential sector. Anyone have experience with independent builders? Any reason why you did/didnt go with them? We dont have any special requirements or need a custom plan. Any insight would be great Re: Independent vs volume builder? 2Dec 12, 2014 7:55 pm I know two people who built with independent builders recommended by their architects. Both builders went bankrupt and they had a long battle to get insurance to cover the rest of the build. From memory you actually have to wait for the builder to file for bankruptcy before the insurance can take over. So the builder can just sit on your build for months before finally declaring bankrupt. This is the major reason I went with a bigger builder.
