Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 10, 2014 8:19 pm Does anyone think its worth changing the roof pitch from 22.5 to 26 degrees? The builder wants to charge $1500 m I going to notice a difference and what are the advantages/disadvantages ? Building the Sheffield 25 + 2 sq Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? Colourbond 2Dec 10, 2014 8:53 pm I will not pay for extra to increase to 26 degrees, for modern home, 22.5 should looks better, our estate will only allow 22.5 roof. but it depends on your house design, not much diff between 22.5 and 26 anyway.... Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? Colourbond 3Dec 10, 2014 9:34 pm You haven't said whether the house is one storey or two as it can make a difference. Generally single storey houses suit a flatter roof (around 20 degrees) while a double storey can go to 30 degrees without looking out of place. Colourbond 4Dec 10, 2014 10:16 pm Its just a single story I have notice alot of mcdonald jones homes have the 26 degree roof pitch from the street makes the house look bigger and more street appeal compared to the 22.5 degress. Not sure why as the difference sounds negligible bt it feels like it does. Building the Sheffield 25 + 2 sq Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? Colourbond 6Dec 11, 2014 8:14 am We upgraded to 26 degree as we prefer the look over the 22.5 and also cause we are getting solar panels, our provider told us between 26 -30 degree is best. Colourbond 7Dec 11, 2014 8:35 am It depends on the width of the house. If your single storey house is wide then by default on 22 degree pitch you will get good height. If you have a small house (or double storey) I would increase in the pitch. I think it would be good to get at least 2.4 on the apex. Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? Colourbond 8Dec 11, 2014 8:53 am Hi The house is on 12.5 metres wide should I consider it or not really worry. Building the Sheffield 25 + 2 sq Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? What does everyone think of those pics I think it makes a noticeable difference. Do you think its worth paying $1500 extra for? Building the Sheffield 25 + 2 sq Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? Colourbond 11Dec 11, 2014 1:29 pm I think it's worth $1500, although ours was a free upgrade, for us we think it's more aesthetically pleasing specially of your having colourbond, perhaps with tiles u wouldn't notice it as much. Colourbond 12Dec 11, 2014 1:44 pm I think it's worth the upgrade too. Here are some pics of our build (check out our thread for more info - Building in SA with Dechellis). We upgraded our roof pitch to 27.5degrees, and picked colourbond in Monument. We believe the added height really adds to the street appeal, but you need to work out what it is that you want. http://i1267.photobucket.com/albums/jj551/emz763/109_zps4ed01df5.jpg http://i1267.photobucket.com/albums/jj551/emz763/aad026a470fad18fa1d065b53efd244c_zps69f952fd.jpg Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? Colourbond 17Dec 20, 2014 11:33 pm I wonder if there is also benefit in having a bigger roof cavity, from a thermal/heat transfer/noise perspective? I think the extra space will help deaden outside noise, i.e. rain, as well as an extra heat barrier. Home is where the lot is Construction commenced 3rd November 2014 Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? For solar panels this is correct, you must have at least 25 degrees (or more) pitch on your roof for them. The other benefit of a higher pitch is attic storage via access ladders. The noise of the rain/heat barriers etc as mentioned would surely be up to the type of insulation you have?? (We have sarking plus batts. ) Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? The noise of the rain/heat barriers etc as mentioned would surely be up to the type of insulation you have?? (We have sarking plus batts. ) I wouldn't say "must" as it all depends on your latitude, what time of year you use most electricity, orientation, etc. The more south you are located, the higher pitch required to achieve maximum efficiency. If your pitch is lower, it doesnt mean you cant have solar panels, it just means that you will lose a bit of efficiency - depending on location, the loss of efficiency can be negligble. Most folk on here will be located well south, so having the larger roof pitch would definitely be beneficial - some installers may not bother installing on anything less than 26 degeree roof pitch down south as the loss of efficiency may not make the system viable. As a rule of thumb, most solar installers state that your latitude is the best angle to mount solar panels to achieve maximum effiency. So my latitude here in Proserpine is 20.4 degrees - close enough to the normal roof pitch of 22.5 that any loss of efficiency would be next to nothing Dale - Building Newbie Proserpine, QLD Re: Roof 22.5 or 26 degrees? Colourbond 20Dec 21, 2014 4:35 pm That's an interesting point. Just asking, as our latitude is 34, how does that translate? (Our panels face due north.) Cheers.
