Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 10, 2014 2:00 pm Hi all, I am starting my build and forgot to request a lock be installed on the garage door leading from the garage into the house. I am guessing that requesting one now would be a variation and therefore incur extra charges. Would it be easier/more cost effective to have the lock fitted after handover?? Thanks! Dale - Building Newbie Proserpine, QLD Re: Garage door lock after handover 3Nov 10, 2014 5:22 pm They are included to external doors, but not always from the internal door from garage to house. No biggy as it just means you cant leave your garage roller door open, but good to have the added security Dale - Building Newbie Proserpine, QLD Re: Garage door lock after handover 4Nov 10, 2014 5:41 pm Try to catch the door people onsite when installing all other exterior doors. Maybe they can arrange to install one then, this way they be all keyed alike. Perhaps you can find out who builder is using for doors and have one preordered for yourself. (Maybe a WA thing) Maybe go buy your own and meet the people there when they are doing it and have them whack it on. You'll want it to be keyed alike to the other external doors. Re: Garage door lock after handover 7Nov 10, 2014 9:29 pm The problem with the garage in to the house door is that they are often just plain internal honeycomb doors, rather than an entrance door. So no matter how fancy a lock you put on it, a good swift kick will knock the door in. My new home will have solid entrance door in there, as well as all the external doors keyed the same.... what's the point in having 5 different keys for same house ? Unless you've got a metal frame then it's just as easy to kick in a solid core door as it is a hollow core. The weak point is the striker plate screwed onto the door jamb. Easier to kick a hole through a hollow core but kicking it in takes much the same amount of effort. Having kicked in a solid door I can attest to it taking little effort lol Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: Garage door lock after handover 9Nov 11, 2014 7:16 pm True, the striker plate is then the weak link in the chain. I'm thinking that the honeycomb doors bend a lot more which helps the move the lock out of the striker plate anyway. Solid core doors just feel a lot nicer anyway. Re: Garage door lock after handover 10Nov 11, 2014 7:45 pm Spoke with the builder and a lock is fitted to the internal garage door. Not sure of the quality of the door though, hoping it is a bit stronger than your average internal door. The problem in my area is that the thieves (mostly juveniles) will go through unlocked doors, but wont actively break in which is a good thing Dale - Building Newbie Proserpine, QLD 1 4775 Dover white or surfmist garage door.
