Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 07, 2014 10:57 am Hi all Having been to Austral recently, it turns out that as we have a H1 slab, and we are required to use 'exposure grade bricks'. I called Austral again, and spoke to a completely different person, who confirmed the same thing. Now having done a search on homeone forum, I note people have done the same due to the 'salt' - which apparently eats away. In the long run - this will mean structural problems for our home. The builder's standard range includes 12 standard bricks, only two of which are exposure grade. Now this is unfair - given we are paying for our H1 slab, and the standard bricks range is geared toward the M Slab. We have advised the builder that choice of 2 is just not right - they have gone and checked with their 'building manager' and are saying there are no issues of us not using exposure grade. They are also happy to do this in writing!! What to do I want to stick to exposure grade - its not every day one builds a home!!! If so, you will need exposure grade. Otherwise, any other brick will be fine. The slab type shouldn't matter, its mainly to do with salt exposure in the air. Your builder should tell you if you need them or not. Differing areas may need them even past 2km from the sea (high wind areas etc) See: What is an Exposure Grade Brick? http://australbricks.com.au/qld/footers/faq/ My Noosa 23 Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72782 Re: Exposure Grade Bricks and H1 slab... issues?? 3Nov 07, 2014 12:56 pm If there is a brick you like that is outside of the standard range why not enquire about upgrading the brick ? May only cost you a few $k but it could make the house a lot more attractive. Re: Exposure Grade Bricks and H1 slab... issues?? 4Nov 07, 2014 4:18 pm Thanks guys. All resolved. Spoke to the Austral sales rep for the area. He said go with what the builder is saying...and it is not always that you need exposure grade (due to salts), and the builders would do the relevant stuff to ensure that the salt doesn't cause further issues. We are no where near the sea. So we will be able to choose from the standard range.
