Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 26, 2014 8:23 am Hi All, Just trying to finalise our final floor plan before our tender appointment with Rawson. We are just having a hard time deciding whether we should flip the house around and have the garage and other 3 rooms on the left hand side. We want to get as much natural sunlight for the alfresco, living room and dining area as possible. We are block 346 block in plan below. http://www.landcom.com.au/downloads/file/edm/EdPark_SalesPlan_Stage4_Rel3_FINAL.pdf Below is the latest draft plan. Whereabouts is this home to be built (add your location to your forum profile, it'll aid you getting help from others later on) ? It will help you to put the important details in your post, rather than with attachments that not everyone is going to bother to load up to search for.... i.e. North is at say the 2 o'clock position in relation to the plan or whatever it happens to be. That all said, try and keep your living areas orientated towards the north to help get the natural sunlight in to them. If at all possible, you may want to consider skewing the house from being parallel to the fence line/road to make it face a bit more to the north, although on the smaller blocks that is nigh on impossible to do. On my 4661 sqm block, I have built my house facing due north, so the house is not parallel to any boundary. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Can be difficult to achieve in a suburban block. BUT if you can have the living area exposed to the Northern sun things will be so much nicer in winter. If you have a great big town house obscuring the northern sun then it really doesn't mater. Think of it this way in winter when the sun is low on the horizon where would you most like to have that warm light comming in. In summer the sun is high and the eaves will shade the direct sun. North is at 2'o clock. We are building at Edmondson Park in Sydney South West so our block is only a tiny 375m square. I wouldn't want the living zones to get the western sun. Flip it and the garage, laundry, bathroom and minor bedrooms get the worst of the sun. We are building at Edmondson Park in Sydney South West so our block is only a tiny 375m square. Then flip it. If concerned about the western sun on the bedrooms, external blinds or shade cloth on that side will help, and chances are is that your neighbours house will provide shade later in the arvo. Re: Garage on left or right of the house? 8Oct 26, 2014 3:31 pm Thanks all for confirming our thought. Will get it flipped before the tender presentation. Will get be getting blinds through out the house. Just to confirm, this should give us maximum natural light to our alfresco, dining and living area right? Re: Garage on left or right of the house? 11Oct 26, 2014 5:23 pm joannek Yes it should be lovely and sunny in there. Forg When you say blinds throughout the house ... if you're talking about ones that go inside the windows, they're for privacy & aesthetics, they don't do much to block summer heat out. Fantastic, just what I wanted hear joannek. Forg, yeah I was referring to blinds inside the house. Would love to hear some idea on blocking out summer heat. Our McDonald Jones Cordova Two Build - http://cordovatwomjh.blogspot.com.au Re: Garage on left or right of the house? 12Oct 26, 2014 5:33 pm Yep. The sun rises on the eastern horizon and sets on the western horizon. It travels at an angle skewed towards the north (not directly over head). In winter the angle it travels north is a bit lower than it does in summer. So in winter when you want more sun in the house, it's perfect for windows facing north. Check out this animation and watch the shadows.
