Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 07, 2014 4:28 pm Hi all We should get our keys on Thursday so I am just trying arrange all the services. I am still a little confused with the NBN and thought I would ask a couple of questions and get a couple of experiecne from people who have recently been hooked up. 1) Does the box go in the garage? 2) Does the providers wireless modem also have to go in the garage beside the NBN box. 3) We are wanting to us normal phone does this also go in the garage or are we able to plug the providers modem and landline phone into the other data/phone points around the house. 4) If we have the option of putting the NBN box else where is it big and noticeable? 6) Can we use a cordless phone? if so does it effect the wifi? Sorry for all the NBN questions but I thought I would pick the brains of people who have recently gone through it. We are going with optus and looking at buying a Uniden cordless phone. Thank you very much for the help Hi sands_13 congrats on the keys The builder should have offered a NBN package or something called smart wiring of the house. This can include the conduit that goes under the ground from the pits in the ground to your house, a hub (either a hills home hub or a clipsal cabinent) on the garage wall where the nbn fibre runs into and that is where NBN Co. will install the device the fibre connects to. With the smart wiring round the house it should mean data ports/network ports are installed around the house and they all lead back into that cabinet. Usually this is where a switch will be installed that the router is plugged into. If you only have one data port/point in the bedrooms or places you need them then the router will have to be located within the enclosure in the garage as you need a port to connect the router to all the other ports around the house and a port from the nbn equipment to your router. The only problem with a hills home hub is that it is made out of metal and that will severely weaken the wireless signal. With the phone it depends whether optus has the phone over the internet like voip or if they use the uni-v port (which is the same socket that you usually see for phones). If they use the data then you will have to make sure to get a voip phone or the like. If they use the uni-v port then you can use a cordless phone just like normal. Our builder provides a phone port that we are possibly getting installed in the kitchen so we can plug a normal phone into that and have it in the kitchen. You can get little adapters that fit into data points and convert them to the smaller size port for phones. You will just have to make sure that data point is connected to the uni-v port in the cabinet. This link helps a bit http://www.nbnco.com.au/connect-home-or-business/information-for-home/fixed-line/installation.html Most cordless phones these days work on the higher frequency which is the 5ghz or above. the ones that say they use the 2.4ghz range can be problematic sometimes. Usually you can request the nbn equipment installed somewhere but there are restrictions like can not be too humid or needs ventilation which optus should be able to explain to you or when the installer comes out you can talk it over with them. They usually install in the garage because it means less fibre is used and it is the easiest place to install it if a cabinet is installed. I hope that helps. it is a bit hard to describe it over the net and not in person. Re: NBN questions in Victoria 3Oct 07, 2014 8:03 pm Thanks Cubshome, that is a huge help thank you very much. I just checked our tender document and it seems we do not have smart wiring, we have a NBN optic requirement section. That includes underground conduit, internal conduit, one data point in the garage and one data point in the study and one phone point in the study but no hills hub. Is this something that we will need to install before the NBN appointment? Optus are coming out the day after the NBN install is it possible they will be installing the Hills or is that the modem they will be hooking up? Hmm so it seems like they are not installing a cabinet and are just having the data and phone points being just the white face plates on the garage wall (just like the white plates your powerpoints are) and then once optus tells NBN Co to install the equipment, NBN Co will just come out and install the white boxes on the wall next to these ports and you will just have the cords coming from the nbn equipment and plugged into the wall plates next to it. Anything to do with extending the internet connection any further past your outside wall is for the owner of the dwelling to organise. This is how telstra sees the copper connection for other houses. They will fix anything that has a problem and will only fix things all the way up to the little grey box on the side of the wall. To have this cabinet installed you will have to contact a licensed cabler. If you only just use wireless devices around the house like a laptop, ipad or phone then just plugging the router into the data point in the study should be fine. We are having more data points around the house and a cabinet installed as we have a few devices like gaming pc's and consoles around the house that would benefit with being hardwired. When optus comes out they will just make sure there is a connection and provide the router and set it up for your connection. Re: NBN questions in Victoria 5Oct 07, 2014 8:39 pm Great, I thought we were missing out on something, we will only have the laptop, tablet, mobile phones running from the wireless router, as long as we can plug that into the data point in the study as well as the cordless phone then we will be happy. I ll make sure I hammer the Optus installer with questions when he comes out. Thanks again for the advice. We had 2 normal looking data points in ours. Nbn came and installed the nbn boxes that you can see and hook up the cables. We didn't need anyone else to come over. We were online the next day. Actually quite simple and fast. Ur service provider should be able to organise everything for you. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Second Build, this time with Carlisle 2016, can't wait! Optus are coming out the day after but sounds like they may not be needed if it is that straight forward. Our wireless router is upstairs. The yellow cable is for our router I believe.
