Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 02, 2014 12:41 pm Hello everyone, Wanting your opinions on guest bedroom sizing please. Is 3 x 3 too small? Should i increase sizing? The home is my partner and i first home - mid 20's no children (yet). So for now, it will just be us and the dogs. But thinking ahead - will the other 3 bedrooms be too small for children's rooms? Here is the design that my partner and i are considering. Any thoughts? http://www.dixonhomes.com.au/images/ima ... sc5902.jpg I know it doesn't have measurements on it (sorry) but all bedrooms, apart from main, are the standard 3 by 3. Home will be build in south east Queensland on 2.5 acres. Any thoughts / suggestions / opinions would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks Re: BEDROOM SIZING 2Oct 02, 2014 12:49 pm I think thats perfect sizing, from memory ours is 4 x 4.5, but we only have a 3 bedroom home, otherwise ours would of been about 3x3 We're very much like you too! I'm 20 and he's 25, first home, our dogs shall be our children! haha, we did make the executive decision that we would make this home for us, and then upgrade to something bigger once our family grows. We really wanted something we could enjoy and have friends over and great big living areas etc. So we ditched the 4th bedroom and made everything bigger for us (so selfish ) Id say if this is going to be your forever home, make the bedroom a bit bigger, after all you have 2.5 acres (which i would kill for and one day plan to have that much space!) You'll appreciate it in the long run Re: BEDROOM SIZING 3Oct 02, 2014 12:56 pm LaceyM -Thanks, we had the exact same thought as you too. We were originally going to build a 3 bedroom so we could have a media room but we decided against it for re-sale value and also the fact that we are quite sure this home will be our forever home, or for at least the next 15 years Also, we are planning a massive deck on the entertainment area with big bi-fold doors so i guess this will act as another 'living' space. I'm thinking ill see if we can maybe extend the 2 bedrooms closest to the master at least (depending on $$) so then we have 2 larger and one smaller bedroom / study. That might keep me happy - LOL. And you're right - i think i will appreciate it in the long run and so will our children. Re: BEDROOM SIZING 4Oct 02, 2014 12:59 pm Hi Bonnie, The rooms on that plan seem fine. 3x3 is on the small size, but it appears to work. They include a generous cupboard and walls for TVs if your future kids want one My smallest room is 2.84 x 3.59 m. I find the rectangular shape is better (or perhaps more useful) than a square. It depends on the furniture layout and what you use the room for. Most bedrooms are just for sleep. As long as you can put a bed in there and open the door, you'll be right! On a side note, where is the laundry??? Is that a washing machine in garage? Is that what they do in QLD? Serious question, I've never seen that before! Re: BEDROOM SIZING 5Oct 02, 2014 1:05 pm Our minor bedrooms are: 3 x 3.46 3.40 x 3.33 3.23 x 3.10 This is my first home and I don't have kids so i'm not sure if they should of been made bigger or are sufficient but too late now! PR - Dale Alcock I believe a trialling designs with laundrys in the garage too. Most plans don't have this but i didn't mind it shoved in the garage - more space for living lol And you're right, bedrooms only need to fit a bed and bedside table in them so should be fine! The robes are quite decent size. thanks! Re: BEDROOM SIZING 7Oct 02, 2014 2:14 pm archetto - your room sizes sound perfect, i like that they're all different! Plus, all are bigger than mine so should be perfect! Re: BEDROOM SIZING 8Oct 02, 2014 3:35 pm Hi Bonnie_p I think they'll be fine... Our bedrooms 2,3 and 4 are: 3.05 x 3.15 3.05 x 3.15 3.05 x 3.35 All comfortably fit a double bed with room to move, if you have recessed robes that aren't taking away from the floor space, even better. Good, normal sized kids rooms if you ask me! This means you can place furniture (chest of drawers, desk or whatever) below the windows without compromising light. Sometimes this really helps when you are furnishing the room. Re: BEDROOM SIZING 11Oct 02, 2014 5:37 pm 3x3 is smallish, but definitely will fit a double bed and bed side tables. If you make bedrooms too big, sending kids to their rooms as punishment wont be much of a punishment if they can fit a kitchen sink in there, haha. I too have the laundry in the garage (extended garage by 800mm). The way i see it, why pay $5000+ for a big laundry when all you really need is a washing machine, dryer and tub (providing you have linen storage elsewhere). I would much rather spend the extra $$ on extending rooms i am going to get the most enjoyment/spend most time in It might be a QLD thing as i am in QLD. I spent the extra $$ by moving laundry into garage to extend my alfresco Dale - Building Newbie Proserpine, QLD Re: BEDROOM SIZING 12Oct 03, 2014 7:59 am We extended our 3x3 rooms to be 3x3.6. We have three boys and the way house prices are going they'll probably be living with us until they're 60 One of our sons' rooms in our current house is 3x3 and we find it too small for him with all his school stuff, soccer stuff and a few toys (he's only 7). If you have the space and the budget, I'd recommend extending a wee bit, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if you don't. We've done that in our build and its going to give us so much more useable space. Also, you'll find that you will just make whatever space you do have, work once you have kids. We're in a tiny 3br 1 bath rental until we get our keys which doesn't sound that bad until I add the part where we have 4 boys aged between 3 and 7. We try and keep the bedrooms mostly free of toys, except for lego, as they aren't huge. It works well so we're doing the same in the next house. Re: BEDROOM SIZING 14Oct 03, 2014 9:08 am Treeseachanger - that is a BRILLIANT idea i think ill take your advice on that one! Re: BEDROOM SIZING 15Oct 03, 2014 9:09 am dalemengel - totally agree with the laundry. As far as im concerned if it can fit a washing machine, tub and dryer in - thats all i need! I dont need an extra 'room' for it if it means it will eat into our living space. Im in a rental at the moment with the laundry in the garage and it works just fine Re: BEDROOM SIZING 16Oct 03, 2014 9:11 am Everyone!!! thank you for your helpful advice and suggestions - i think it will ultimately come down to $$$. Id LOVE to extend the rooms a little so ill have to see if we can bedget that in, even if its just the 2 bedrooms closest to the master and keep the 4th as a smaller bedroom / study. And if i cant afford it, ill do the window idea, i think thats brilliant. Ill actually probably do it regardless Re: BEDROOM SIZING 17Oct 03, 2014 2:38 pm Glad to help. There is no price difference between glass and brick so it shouldn't cost you anything to change them which is a bonus Re: BEDROOM SIZING 18Oct 03, 2014 5:19 pm Our last house had 3x3 rooms and IMO they are too small for kids. I have a 3 year old and a 10 month old and there beds and toys just fit with not much room to play our current build has larger rooms because of this. If you can and you have the money is be making them bigger Re: BEDROOM SIZING 19Oct 03, 2014 5:44 pm hitman Our last house had 3x3 rooms and IMO they are too small for kids. If you can and you have the money is be making them bigger And that's where it comes down to personal choice and how your kids use their rooms. Ours keep very few toys in their room as their rooms are mainly used for sleeping in or quietly reading or playing with a small tub of Lego as they tend to play in the communal family areas (they're 8 and 10). Our minor bedrooms worked out to be 3 x 3.4 m which is plenty for us. In our last house they shared a bedroom that was about 3 x 4.5m. But yes, 3x3 is on the smaller side if it's also used for toy storage and playing. ~ Anne I used to be indecisive but now I'm not quite sure. Eeek - We're embarking on a knockdown rebuild!
