Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 30, 2014 12:21 pm Hi, hoping for some help in relation to choosing bricks (we are buidling with Carlisle and can choose from Boral or Austral ranges). Our original decisions in relation to the exterior were: Homestead Tan bricks (Austral) with off-white mortar Woodland grey garage Woodland grey windows and doors (including front entry) Woodland grey gutters Dune Fascia Charcoal roof (tiles) The overall look is quite dark but this is what we are after. I should note that we chose Woodland Grey for everything as we could get the windows to match the gutters and garage etc. I preferred Monument (darker grey) but couldn't get windows in this colour. However, hubby and I have now seen several houses built in Homestead Tan and/or Blackwood (similar) and well... they just look very brown. Not very interesting or attractive. Also, we have just discovered that A&L Windows and Doors (our supplier) are now able to do the windows etc in Monument, which also changes things. So, we are looking at other options. I am considering either Boral Mocha or Boral Kurrajong, which are similar. Ideally, I would love to see some photos of houses that have been built in either of these bricks. Obviously I can see the samples at Boral or online but seeing them on a built house is very different. Would love to see them with our other colour choices but know that this is unlikely!! If anyone has used these bricks, would you mind posting a photo? Will be eternally grateful!!! We also used Monument for colorbond, fascia, gutters and windows (a&l windows). I've got all our colours listed in our blog (link below). Just check out the Woodland grey first in real life it can have a green tinge to it. If you want to go lighter window frames shale grey and dune match nicely with monument roof. We just preferred darker colours. Hope that helps a bit. Re: BRICKS! utterly confused 3Oct 02, 2014 9:06 am Hi Joea, thanks for your reply! Yeah the green tinge to Woodland Grey is a but of a turn off, which is why I did prefer Monument. The fact that A&L now do the windows in Monument is great. I will have a look at your blog and thread and will follow it with great interest! As I said I have seen some houses in Homestead Tan that look fine, and others that aren't so great, but I might like them more with the other colours we have picked; it is so hard to tell without all of the colours together. I don't really want to pay more $$ for Cat 4 bricks or above if I don't have to. Thanks for your help! I agree, it's very difficult to picture it all coming together and the best way is to go to newly built estates and look at the different façades. We also liked the homestead tan but we found the colour was a bit too consistent in colour if that makes sense? We liked a bit of colour variability in our bricks. That's why we chose Melbourne Hawthorn. Our next preference was Melbourne Hawksburn. But yes $$$ ours cost us about 4k with off-white mortar for a 30sqm single story. Cheers Re: BRICKS! utterly confused 5Oct 02, 2014 11:00 am Hi TashPaul, I'm not a huge fan of brown having lived through the 80's (mission brown anyone? ) so I went for red bricks on my house. I originally chose homestead red in attempts to save myself some cash and asked my builder to give me some addresses of homes which they had built in that colour (which they happily did). Suffice it so say I HATED homestead red because it was, well, orange! Eventually I upgraded to one of the Melbourne range bricks (Lawson) and was lucky enough to get the bricklayer who does the display homes so they look really good. Aside from our differences in colour choices, the moral of my story is to ask your builder for homes that have been constructed in your choice of brick that you can drive past and have a look at. I totally agree that looking at a small wall or a single brick does not give you any real idea of what that colour/texture etc will look like en mass. If you are planning to use a lot of face brick (as opposed to render) in your facade it may be worth spending the extra money on a brick you are really happy with, rather than one you just settled for. Good luck If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8306 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair to do it properly you need to dig out the garden and waterproof the outside of the wall. There are some products you can put on the face of the bricks but the water is… 2 4624 |
