Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 26, 2014 11:50 am Hey guys, We are getting ready start looking at lighting for our new house. We were just thinking of taking the easy route and wacking in down lights everywhere but after doing a little research this does seem to be a bad idea. I am thinking of down lights for our main hallway and bedrooms only but need advice on what lights to put in the theatre and main living. Kitchen will have pendant hang down lights as well as perhaps a mixture of down lights. I don't want the lights shining in my face when watching TV etc.. So are there any real good alternatives out there? See my electrical plan here and I most certainly appreciate any advice or experiences http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=qsqljn&s=8#.VCTFIPmSx8G Cheers! Re: Lighting Choice 2Sep 26, 2014 11:54 am I'm a big fan of downlights but prefer to have pendants in lounge rooms and bedrooms and one above the dining table can be nice too. I'd probably suggest getting an extra light or two to your alfresco area as it looks quite long and I prefer to use a fluro tube in the garage. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Lighting Choice 3Sep 26, 2014 12:22 pm Thanks Robbie! Yes I i guess the concern I have is we have a rather large open area games / dining / lounge / kitchen and I want the lighting to look somewhat consistent. So I might be forced to go down the down light path. I do like the idea of the pendants above the kitchen bench and dining table though Maybe I can have down lights through the main area but lamps in the lounge room so if they are too glarey I can turn them off and use the lamps instead.. I am looking at dimmers as well. Re: Lighting Choice 4Sep 26, 2014 2:23 pm Same here - but consider getting seperate switches for open plan areas - EG our family/dining/kitchen is all open plan but we have 4 switches (2 for the family area so we can choose which lights to have on and one each for the kitchen and dining). We will probably do dimmers after handover as at our electrical appointment were told these are done with the switch not by any specific wiring. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Lighting Choice 5Sep 26, 2014 5:33 pm Yep we have gone for 2-way switches around the place. I missed one though at the door to the bedrooms kind of kicking myself there the kids would have needed that for when they come out for a drink at night. With the dimmers you need to run a conduit down to your light and need specific wiring for this i believe. Could be wrong but i ran conduits down to my switches where I was looking at dimmers.
