Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 23, 2014 2:15 pm Hello, I am currently trying to find as much info as possible on open risers. We love the open risers at the display house and we have been to the display umpteen number of times. We have used the open staircase without any issues/accidents. We have also seen young children (not babies or toddlers) walk up the staircase without any difficulty. Has anyone gone for the open riser upgrade with Carlisle? It will be great if you could share your experience. We are thinking of having the timber open riser stairs with steel or wooden baluster. Thanks all. Are you having balustrade on both sides or just on the one side? For a wider staircase would it be a good idea to have a handrail in addition to the balustrade? We only require balustrade down the middle of the stairs as either side is enclosed with plasterboard. We have gone for a verticle timber balustrade similar to the pic below. I belive we will have a handrail installed along the plasterboard wall too. I just imagined Lego or matchbox cars flying through the openings! Maybe the majority of the world isn't as much of a trip-hazard as I am, but particularly when I can't see my feet (eg. carrying somehting) the right-angles somehow mean I know where they are the whole time.
