Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 16, 2014 10:34 pm Hi all I have my plans from builder based on a display home kitchen plan. I am generally fine with it but I have some niggling thoughts on the kitchen island layout. It has a dishwasher recess but i'd also like to capture a microwave recess under bench (I have avoided having this up high after being burnt previously!), and I'm happy to forgo a pull out bin drawer as I don't use them (I'm happy to have one in cupboard under sink). I would like a drawer under the microwave recess which should be straight forward enough. My sink shown will change to a double under mount and the island width change to 1.2m. does anyone have any ideas on better island layout? I'm getting really confused on this one The bench is 2790mm long, dishwasher recess 610mm, I want a bank of cutlery drawers in here (450mm enough?) (not fussed if not right next to dishwasher) but mostly i'd like to fit all this in with keeping the sink central.... If I can't keep the sink central id rather have it more heavily placed to one end than other, rather than just off centre which will probably bug me forever. Any ideas clever people?? https://www.dropbox.com/s/verqvqs3fahuv ... m.png?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/iizq3t26kvg93 ... m.png?dl=0 Re: Help- any ideas on kitchen island bench? 2Sep 16, 2014 10:45 pm Just an Idea Beazley. What about putting the microwave on its own shelf in the pantry cupboard. We have done this in a kitchen previously and it worked so well that we have done it again with this build. We also get the benefit of being able to close the cupboard on it and not see it. Lets face it they can be ugly. Our previous place had an underbench microwave recess and I cursed it no end! Not built yet, so hoping its going to be good. Have you seen your house built H? Ie been able to walk through a show home or similar? If so, I guess that island design looked good? Help- any ideas on kitchen island bench? 8Sep 17, 2014 11:41 pm No we haven't started building yet but I did see the display of our house! The only problem I have with the island is the pipes took up a bit of the room in the cupboard under the sink.. Other then that I love the layout.. Yes, those damn pipes! So there you go Beezly, H suggested a good layout that will be improved with clever organization tactics in the cupboards under the sink. Re: Help- any ideas on kitchen island bench? 10Sep 18, 2014 6:00 am I second the microwave on pantry bench/appliance cupboard idea. My sister has under bench microwave in a rental and when I cook there I find it more awkward to remove hot dishes than m/waves at head height. If you have little kids, I would definitely avoid under bench microwave. http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: Help- any ideas on kitchen island bench? 11Sep 18, 2014 1:28 pm I've had a micro under the bench 10 years, never had any probs, happy doing again (also coz butlers will be full with kettle, toaster, juicer, bread and coffee machine). Lucky I don't have little kids, just dogs ... who WISH they could open the micro and fridge too Re: Help- any ideas on kitchen island bench? 12Sep 18, 2014 1:50 pm I'd move the dishwasher and sink to the left so that the dishwasher is on the end. Next to right would be cupboards under sink, then microwave with drawer under, then bank of drawers on far right. However my personal preference is to not have the sink on the island at all, but that's only my opinion and plenty disagree Also, if you're increasing the width of the island to 1200mm are you adding additional cupboards to the back of the island? Our builder has limited the maximum overhang of the stone to 300mm, not sure if that's typical of all stone. I would be having some cabinets on other site of Island if widening it, and may go wider. Extra storage and as you say also needed for strength and overhang. Lucky I don't have little kids, just dogs ... who WISH they could open the micro and fridge too Good to hear. I'm only left with under the bench as an option really as I'm not into the wall ovens in Australia... And I'm fine with it. Plus I think it's a positive little kids can learn to use it.
