Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 06, 2008 10:49 am We are building with PD (Illoura 30) and were told that they dont fit bathroom accessories, think toilet roll holder, shower tail etc etc.
I remember reading in someones blog (sorry I cant remember the name ) that they suggested upgrading to double shower rails, that was one of the things I wrote in our little book to ask about but we were told that they dont fit any! I guess its one of those things that pretty easy to add later, but I 'm a little worred about the risk of cracking a tile when drilling to put in plug for the rail screws etc. and just figured I'd be happy to pay them supply and install some that would match the other fittings in the bathroom(s). How does that measure up with other PD customers experiances? Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 2Jun 06, 2008 11:05 am I am not building with PD, don't think they even exist in SA, but I think this is very strange: why on earth would a builder not install such a standard thing as a towel rail or toilet roll holder????
These are standard with our builder and I assumed with all builders: I mean, its not as if anyone would NOT use a toilet roll holder and I guess if you really wanted to put your own thing in after handover, it could be negotiated to remove it. In our case, the standard inclusions were plain chrome, if we wanted to upgrade to, say, a double towel rail, we could do so, at a cost of course, and we did add a hand towel ring to go on the vanity of a 3 way bathroom for the very reasonable upgrade cost of $29. Quote: think toilet roll holder, shower tail etc etc. Mind you - installing a shower tail - now that could be interesting.... Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 3Jun 06, 2008 11:09 am I’m afraid that’s correct many builders don’t include these or even door stops in their houses as standard or even as an option. This is why at frame stage I suggest to people to add some timber where they want to have these installed. Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 5Jun 06, 2008 11:21 am mikkyG Thanks for the tip Kiwi I'll definatly be doing this where I can now that I know. IMO it's best to do this just prior to plaster i.e. after the Plumber and Electrician have finished their rough in. Usually you'll find enough timber on site to do what you need. Another thing if you're looking to install ceiling fans at any stage in the future, i.e. not with the Electrician doing the job, it pays to put some noggins in for these as well. Don't forget some timber for the dryer if you're looking to wall mount. Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 6Jun 06, 2008 11:28 am yep, no roll holders or towell rails for us either! They do do door stops though - but only for the "main" doors, not for robe doors. Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 7Jun 06, 2008 11:38 am Our builder (in Vic) doens't install this sort of stuff either, but was happy to whack in some extra noggins for us so that we could put in toilet roll holders, towel racks etc ourselves. Also one for the dryer.
Then need to take some measurements and photos of where they are... I guess God didn't use subbies... Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 8Jun 06, 2008 12:00 pm kiwi056 many builders don’t include these or even door stops in their houses as standard or even as an option So all these builders expect us to use the toilet without the toilet paper JGK include toilet roll holders, double towel rails and door stops as standard Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 9Jun 06, 2008 12:01 pm mikkyG We are building with PD (Illoura 30) and were told that they dont fit bathroom accessories, think toilet roll holder, shower tail etc etc. kiwi056 I’m afraid that’s correct many builders don’t include these or even door stops in their houses as standard or even as an option. Oh man....that's being stingy....I kinda glad I didn't go down the building path, last time I built at least the sensible things were at least "standard"....you guys are got even more to think about.... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 11Jun 06, 2008 12:16 pm I know it seems ridiculous to not put anything in, but a few years ago I lived in a rental in Hillside. It was brand new when I moved in (Henley built).
The owner told me the towel rails, toilet roll holder, etc were part of the building package. They were complete crap! Fell off every day, pulled bits out of the wall. I had to have maintenance from the real estate there all the time trying to fix them. I guess my point is, I'd rather have nothing than have complete crap which is generally what the standard inclusion would be. With this house I'll be putting in nice ones when I have the money to buy what I want. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. We don't get any bathroom accessories from PD either. But I am well prepared and have bought it all off ebay at a great price. So before the plaster goes up we will take our purchases to the house and decided on where everything will go and put in the extra noggins, take photos and measurements and will install it after handover. Fortunately our accessories will be going straight into the plaster so don't need to worry about cracking the tiles! We do get door stops though! Our last building experience was with Coral Homes in Brisbane 11 years ago and they supplied it all. That's my point exactly. Everyone I know that has got the builder to put them in has ended up with crap. Then they have to be replaced and there's marks on the walls, etc, etc. I'm happy to have nothing put in, make the preparations to install later, then install quality products that suit my needs and taste. Now I'm actually looking forward to hitting up the shops and finding the perfect pieces! mmmm heated shower rail... mmmm Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 17Jun 06, 2008 10:16 pm Our builder is providing double towel rails to bath and ensuite and toilet roll holders- from the prestart package it says Dorf, don't know what their quality is like? Quite surprisingly it also says that 'c' handles are installed on all the cabinets. I dont know what 'c' handles are, but we will be putting in our own anyhoo. From the people that we have spoken too that have built houses here, cabinet handles were all extra and extra to install. Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 18Jun 06, 2008 10:48 pm we are building with PD as well, our site super is very nice that when we meet him on site after frame finished he did a walk through with us and let us mark where extra noggins we want, so we marked noggins for both toilets and both bathrooms, the next time we visit the site all noggins are in, when we ask how much the carpenter would ask for these works he just mention a slab will do. he also recommended noggins for wall mounted TV or massive picture frames / mirror.
but i know somewhere in this forum a site super ( not from PD) does not allow any extra noggins due to not stated in the drawings, so it really depends who your site super is. for drilling hole to tile, i have done it several time myself, i was just following a DIY or "idiot guide to drill hole on bathroom tile" book, luckily none tile was cracked after the work, so there sholud be ways to get it right Re: PD no Bathroom accessories? 19Jun 06, 2008 11:55 pm We're building with PD Prestige, and no, we don't get any of that stuff, either! But I've also done the Ebay thing, and we're also just about to put the extra noggins in for all of that (and wall mounted tvs) And, funnily enough, I was out lookung at heated towel rails today!
