Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 09, 2014 10:17 pm Hello, for our proposed build, I am keen on Brikmakers Vintage Red bricks with a white mortar. Naturally the builder is telling us the white mortar costs more. My question then, is does this sound right? Why should white mortar cost more? And if it should, for a typical 4x2 brick house, how much extra should I expect to pay? Thanks Tim Re: White Mortar 2Sep 09, 2014 10:28 pm Yes, it costs more. We're paying $1900 for off white mortar for a two storey build and half the top half is cladding! Re: White Mortar 3Sep 09, 2014 11:05 pm I think the white mortar extra cost is because they have to order in specific sand and cement instead of getting whatever sand and cement is cheapest. Although I have no idea what the -real- extra cost to the builder is! I'm paying $983 for off-white mortar for my 40ish square double story. Cost could be anywhere from $500 to $2000ish from what I have read but it does seem a highly variable item. Land settled May '14. Re: White Mortar 7Sep 10, 2014 9:22 pm MyH1Login $800 for 29sq house. Grr we gotta pay, but so worth it. I've seen my bricks without white mortar and it looks totally different (and definitely subpar) Agree. Our bricks are creamy (SA Bianca) and look completely different with grey mortar. With off white mortar, we get a 'Mediterranean' look Re: White Mortar 9Sep 10, 2014 11:23 pm Our house isn't built yet, so I can only dream it's going to look good Hopefully it will look a bit like this photo I found in a previous H1 thread ... This is a great thread for checking out bricks and mortar: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=3737&start=100 Re: White Mortar 10Sep 11, 2014 8:57 am As dragonchild has already mentioned, the extra costs is the different cement and the more expensive white sand that's used to make the mortar. We're getting offwhite mortar for our place, and because the sand is so expensive, the brickie won't have it delivered until he's ready to start, rather than just getting it delivered now and have it blow or wash away. My brickies said they did a house in the Gaylehaven estate nearby with the same bricks that I'm using, and said that it totally changes the look of the house. I took a look at it and the house looks dull and dirty looking by comparison to ones with the offwhite mortar. I'll try and remember to take a photo of that house, and put it up as a comparison to the offwhite mortar when our place finally gets bricked up. So the mortar can make a big difference to the look of a house. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. I'll get my photos up when the bricks go up my place, to show the same bricks but with offwhite mortar on place, and standard mortar on another house with the same bricks.
