Called SS, doesn't plan on having painters in until after the next completion date. Useless. Seems they are at least a month behind everywhere. Re: Fairmont Home builders - South Australia 94Apr 15, 2015 4:48 pm Hey everyone, We have our selections appointments with Direct Interiors & Supreme Kitchens in a weeks time. From all of you who have been through it, do you have any advice or things to watch out for? Also anything you would have changed with the benefit of hindsight? Cheers! Re: Fairmont Home builders - South Australia 95Apr 15, 2015 5:42 pm Hi man1. We went through our selections in September and found it to be a great experience. The staff at both places were really helpful and great to speak to and get advice from. Can't say we regretted anything yet as we're still waiting for the house to be finished. Below is a list of things I either wish I knew first or found out along the way which might hopefully help. 1. Go there before your selections and make yourself familiar with what is available. Don't be surprised and have to rush a decision. 2. It might be annoying or take a long time but don't try and rush through. Listen to the people who know what they are doing. Supreme in particular are excellent and very accommodating and will answer any questions you have. They are also willing to listen to your ideas and accommodate them into the kitchen design. 3. DONT be pressured into getting appliance upgrades through fairmont/direct. They might not be happy about telling you but in no way are you obligated to get any appliances through them. Fairmont offer reasonable credits for ovens and hot plates (around $500 each) and you can use the money saved to get your own appliances elsewhere. No matter what the fairmont or direct employee says supreme kitchens are lovely and will let you use what ever appliances you like and will do their best to fit them into your kitchen. If you go down this path though you will need to have the model numbers and instructions/measurements of the appliances. 4. Same goes for tapware. You can supply your own if you wish and get credits for what you don't get through Fairmont. 5. Sink prices are similar in most shops so if you want to upgrade direct prices are actually quite good. 6. Remember bench tops might be something that you can upgrade at a later date without too much effort and you can get cheaper prices elsewhere if you want. Focus more on getting the bones and structure of the kitchen right. 7. Pot drawers and any kind of drawers are expensive BUT are upgrades that are harder to do after the kitchen is installed so if it comes down to fancy bench tops or pot drawers is go pot drawers all the time. Same goes for bathroom/ensuite vanities. 8. Direct interiors has a clearance section in their showroom. See something you like at a good price? Take it and use it in your house, although you may have to pay cash for it instead of 'adding to your bill'. They had some nice tapware and sinks when we did selections. 9. If in doubt go neutral colours. Do research before hand and as wanky as it sounds take in a 'mood board' or photos of kitchens and bathrooms you like. The staff are happy to make suggestions based on what you think looks good. 10. Enjoy it and don't be too intimidated and feel pressured. We found it a great experience and can't wait to see everything all finished and built in a few months time! Don't be scared when supreme show you the laminate board of doom with over 100 different laminate colours to choose from! Re: Fairmont Home builders - South Australia 96Apr 15, 2015 8:10 pm Definitely check the selections beforehand. Mixer Taps - It's really hard and expensive to change after. Ovens/Sinks etc = I would pay for the one you like as they cut to fit (though most are standard sizes). I upgraded the sink, the standard oven and cooktop were good enough for me. Shower screens, our design was custom so we went in expecting a hit on this. Semi frameless is the best value for money. Be prepared to feel like you are on a production line but don't feel like you should rush. Door handles - We paid extra for levered door handles. Didn't do any flooring through them, they're terrible for floors. Have fun. Re: Fairmont Home builders - South Australia 97Apr 19, 2015 10:09 pm Thanks so much Jonooo and Feroshious for the many tips and insights for selections appointments. I'm sure others will find it useful too when the time comes. Had to laugh at the "laminate board of doom", sometimes you almost wish there were less options! Re: Fairmont Home builders - South Australia 98Apr 22, 2015 8:01 pm I'm currently building with Fairmont too and found both Direct and Supreme really great. I spent weeks... ok months of weekends at both places sorting out my selections and yet still changed my mind on the day! Suggestions made by them and I'm glad I listened to were the upgraded hidden range hood, under bench taps in the laundry for the washing machine, inset sink and mixer tap in the laundry. Other choices I made that I'm really happy with are the J groove handles, 2pac finish and I love the recessed kicker in the vanity and shingle roof tiles. I did find their flooring expensive and ended up going elsewhere. Re: Fairmont Home builders - South Australia 99Apr 25, 2015 9:01 am OK, selections done! A few from me: - We had lovely consultants for each appointment, but they will definitely try and keep things moving and you feel like you need to make decisions fairly quickly (especially at DI), so do your research beforehand. There really isn't enough time to discuss every selection in full detail so plan to only go into depth on things that are most important to you. - You need to have an opinion on grout! For every tile you choose there is about a dozen shades of grout you will need to pick from, ranging from black to white. - At SK you will need to choose the edge profile of your laminate benches (ie. how sharp or rounded the corner is) which is something I hadn't thought of before. - SK will try and accommodate any of your ideas into the kitchen & bathrooms/laundry, so you have a fair bit of creative freedom there! - They definitely won't tell you about every available option, there are some things you have to ask about to get prices on (eg. upgraded drains to the smarter looking ones). - They seem to be fairly neutral when it comes to upgrades, they don’t try and upsell you on anything. - You have 5 business days to change your mind, choose your default option at the appointment and you can always call or email later and change something. Builders interview in a few days, anyone have any tips for that to share? Re: Fairmont Home builders - South Australia 100Apr 26, 2015 3:51 pm Hi Fairmont builders! We signed up with Fairmont 4 weeks ago. We are doing a knock down rebuild and are currently living in the house we will knock down. The book they gave us at signing said we would receive the footings variation about 4-5 weeks after signing, but we haven't seen anyone come to do the soil testing, and there aren't any holes outside! How long did it actually take Fairmonts to organise the soil testing and vibe variation documents? Did they contact you to arrange a time for soil testing beforehand? Thanks!
