It varies, from council to council. I believe it's 900mm where I am. Check your local council's planning (zoning) documentation, which is likely to be online. Look for "side setback" requirements. Also, if you are building a 2 storey house, be careful. The top storey may have a larger side setback than the bottom storey (ie. the top storey may have a larger minimum distance from the boundary than the bottom storey), to stop overshadowing.
