I think it does really well to mimic its surroundings... the colour of the walls emulate the tree bark and the shape of the roof copies that of the surrounding trees. My build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=68002 Re: Ugly or not? 5Aug 20, 2014 7:39 pm Roof angle is to drop snow off it. Its obviously a design from North America/ Europe. If youre more than happy to give a passing nod to the architecture of a colder clime..................go for it. I'd be changing the pitch of the roof it would be a PAIN to heat it with ceilings of that height. I think in the same context, the house is beautiful. +1 Also, as Burnsfirsttime says "the colour of the walls emulate the tree bark". I really like the grey colour, & think the choice of timber would be critical. If you plan a rectangular build like this, make sure you orientate it correctly. Following passive solar principles, with the longer walls facing north & south (& minimising western windows), will result in a more comfortable house. I wouldn't recommend a lot of skylights. North facing skylights will be hot in summer, while all skylights will leak heat in winter. Hard to see, but I assume this build has 2nd storey loft spaces. If you want loft spaces I'd recommend having narrow slit windows on the gable ends, along the roof lines (Hillcott barn, on Grand Designs, used these & is shown below). I would expect that these would be more thermally efficient than skylights, are inconspicuous, & look great when the interior is lit at night. Re: Ugly or not? 8Aug 20, 2014 9:45 pm Absolutely gorgeous actually. From the inside, you'll probably want more windows though. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as it is said, but I find the design in question quite pleasing, plus simple rectangles with a gable is a cost effective way to build apparently. I also have to consider resale and so more for than against is preferrable. That said this design isn’t suited to the suburbs, it needs a green space on acreage, preferably forested. Thanks for highlighting that MyH1Login and Burnsfirsttime. @Bayview, Forg, Wandin: Yes, as soon as the roof line is changed, or eaves and awnings are added, you lose the look I’d like to capture. @ddarroch: Good points about energy efficiency, I’m thinking along the same line. Thanks for the comment and link housebythewater. Fantastic view that house has.
