Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 29, 2014 11:03 pm Hi all. Just wondering if anyone has used a builder that provides a proper schedule with a Gantt chart to track the build? I have spoken to a couple builders and none seem to even know what a Gantt chart is!!! Does not fill me with confidence that any time schedule will be kept. Thanks Re: Gantt Chart - Any builders provide one as a schedule too 2Oct 30, 2014 7:38 am It probably depends on the builder, and even may depend on the person doing the organising. It seems to me that the site supervisors are people who've probably been tradies themselves; if they use tools like that for planning, they wouldn't necessarily know the name of the charts. However I'd be highly unsurprised if our site supervisor isn't doing all scheduling on paper & in his head, given how everything changes & slips all the time, maintaining schedules & charts would have to be a total PITA? However - I do know that when someone was trying to sell us some project management software which has Gantt charts as a very minor part (ie. it's set-up to plan/manage people, parts/materials ordering, etc), they cited AV Jennings as their biggest Australian customer. Dunno is Sekisui introduced all new methodology when they took over ... but in a way, I find it hard to believe that a Japanese head-office wouldn't enforce a fairly precise planning methodology. In an ironic way though, I'm not laughing at you! Perhaps they do, perhaps they don't (my money is on the latter). Either way, a builder would never let you have a copy. That would instigate a level of accountability they would not be comfortable with. Are you an engineer by any chance? If so, don't expect a house build to run the same way a project does. I know it should and I could discuss at length all the things I think are wrong with the building industry, but I don't have all day! timwa Does not fill me with confidence that any time schedule will be kept. Re: Gantt Chart - Any builders provide one as a schedule too 5Oct 30, 2014 4:35 pm I been playing the house building game for many years and to be honest have never heard of the Gantt Chart. Ok mr google just told me what it is, so now I know what its called. Years ago a construction manager of a project builder i worked for tried to get us to use them. They simply dont work with domestic construction because its such a dynamic process. The main thing I try to achieve is have someone working on site 4 out of 5 days, I dont need a schedule to know that if I achieve this i'll have your house built well inside the contract period. My last project was a multi-million dollar mine site for which I was lead engineer - so for us schedules were fairly important. Oh well - I shall just have to see how this goes .... I had an old shower unit that broke on me and when I took it off, there were only 2 water pipes, instead of the normal 2 water pipes and a shower head pipe. S o I… 0 36936 Thank you so much.
