Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 03, 2008 12:47 pm Well I've been loitering around here or a little while now, and I'm excited to say, WE'VE STARTED!! My wife and I own a cosy little apartment in Southbank, but late last year decided that 08 was the year for us to start a family. Our little apartment doesn't suit, and so we decided to build! Baby isn't on the way yet, but our house is! We started looking in mid-Jan, and had chosen our land and our house 2 weeks later. Funny story... I'd looked at Urbanedge online, but we figured they were probably a little pricey and so we weren't even going to go visit them. The day we were due to go meet the second time with PD, I woke up early in morning and called out half-asleep to the wife, "We have to go see Urbanedge! We have to go see Urbanedge!" That day, we went and had a look at the Larne instead of going to PD, and the moment we walked into the Larne we were sold! Just a little freaky.......... For us non designy types, knowing what our house would look like from the display was fantastic. We were sick of seeing jazzed up displays that look nothing like what you get (unless you pay $80k for the upgrades!)... so Urbanedge suited us just nicely! Similarly, Manhattan Place just jumped off the page at us, and was exactly what we were after. 700m2 block, ready to build in May... perfect! From the day we started looking to the day they started building has been just a little over 4 months! I guess you can't say that we're indecisive! This is our house: I photoshopped this from a scan and modified it to show our facade. We've extended the garage by 2.5 meters so rather than getting a wider door, we added a window for my workshop. The floor plan: The alfresco dining area was added, and the garage was extended to match the roofline. We also added double doors to the garage for easy backyard access. Otherwise, the place is pretty much as displayed! We love the Larne, as it is very open, and feels like a large apartment...which is what we've been living in for years! Only about 30sq, but no space wasted on 32 sitting rooms, 28 dining rooms and 15 dunnies that most places have these days!! Our kids don't need an acre each to live in The colours: My photoshop skills need some work... but you get the idea! Urbanedge don't actually offer this facade anymore... i think it is probably a little too "standard" for their product. Personally, I preferred their other facades, but after much discussion we took a vote and agreed to do it the wife's way And finally, the work so far: Not much to see yet, but any action is good action (with building that is ) Portaloo is on site, block is levelled (although it was practically dead flat to begin with... site costs were about the price of a pie and coke ), pegs are out to do the slab, tap and water meter are in. We're told that the meterbox will go up this Thursday, plumbing stuff will be done by this weekend, and the slab will be started next Wednesday (the 11th). Fingers crossed that Urbanedge's builders are as good as their customer service team! ************************************************************************************** UPDATES: 20 June 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=73652#73652 - Slab formwork done... waiting for the rain to stop. 23 June 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=74475#74475 - Slab completed!! 13 July 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=81864#81864 - Frame completed!! 21st July 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=84239#84239 - Nearly at lockup!! 28th July 2008 = http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=86532#86532 - All locked up 3rd August 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=88619#88619 - Kinda at lock.. but still not. 11th August 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=91257#91257 - Fixing not quite finished 13th August 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=92053#92053 - Fixing Complete 25th August 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=96722#96722 - Painting nearly done 3rd September 2008 -http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=100362#100362 - Electrical and tiles in progress 8th October2008 -http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=113925#113925 - Ready for inspection 17th October 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=117684#117684 - Inspection 5th November 2008 - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=124310#124310 - Inspection Alan and Thuy in Melbourne Building a second time! I was really interested in Urbanedge but unfortunately they don't build where our land is so that was that! Good to see you posted photos right of the bat. Paula will be happy!! Good luck (with both projects, house and bub) and keep us posted. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Urbanedge Larne - Letter box trouble! (updated Sep 7) 5Jun 03, 2008 4:34 pm Yep all the colour selection and internal stuff was done about a month ago.
We've pretty much chosen most things as were displayed in the Larne... purely because that was the exact colour scheme we wanted anyway! Only thing we've changed really are the cupboard laminate, carpet, door and cupboard handles and the tapware! I'm sure it was the quickest colour selection they've ever done The kitchen is pretty much the same as shown here, but our cupboards are a little darker... So instead of their very stripey laminate we have something a little less stripey We didn't like their pointy taps... so ours are a these nice square Dorf ones... Carpet is a little darker than the standard shown here, and we've also deleted the window above the bed... as it is south east facing...and we don't like being awake early My apologies to anyone on dial up internet! I like pictures!!!! Alan and Thuy in Melbourne Building a second time! Re: Urbanedge Larne - Letter box trouble! I liked the look of UrbanEdge but never explored them properly. They're a bit different, which is a good thing! Geoff - Decophile. Re: Urbanedge Larne - Letter box trouble! (updated Sep 7) 13Jun 03, 2008 9:53 pm Toast,
Congratulations on finally building your dream house! We look forward to see the progress of your build! We also checked out UE before.. quite impressive houses they've got... but they didn't have double storey houses at that time.. don't know now tho. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Urbanedge Larne - Letter box trouble! (updated Sep 7) 14Jun 03, 2008 10:29 pm Hi all!
Thanks for the replies We're very excited, and we're happy to have so many interested folks to share our experience with! Tam Do you get the same wardrobe built in? Love it. Yep, all included. Everything in the photos (other than beds etc) is included as standard..which made life easy for us. It's why their displays don't have curtains etc. Everything from the dual ovens, to the downlights, carpets and builtin robes are all included standard! Of course, it still remains to be seen how it turns out VJ We also checked out UE before.. quite impressive houses they've got... but they didn't have double storey houses at that time.. don't know now tho. Unfortunately, they still don't have two storey houses... not sure why to be honest! I know they've built some, because I've seen plans... but they may have been custom jobs? Cheers, Alan Alan and Thuy in Melbourne Building a second time! Re: Urbanedge Larne - Letter box trouble! Yes, I saw some custom (or at least one-off?) designs near where I live in Yarraville a year or so before they started doing the volume stuff. Congratulations Toast! Looks like we might be up to the same stage as each other ... look forward to following your progress! Re: Urbanedge Larne - Letter box trouble! (updated Sep 7) 17Jun 06, 2008 10:00 pm Hi
My husband went out tonight and they have put down our slab already. Man they work fast. I went out a few days ago and our temp fence was up and plumbing done. I didnt expect it to happen so fast so thats great. I am going out to have a look tomorrow. I guess I can expect the slab bill shortly ha ha. I hope it all goes smoothly for you. I see we have another porter davis house going up across from mine and they are bulding a big house over two sections. I wonder if it will be one of those mcmansions people talk about. So far only yours and my builder have started so will be interesting to see what other builders people are going with. Yeah it's pretty nice... it on the top of list for us.. a "hot" kitchen Two ovens are a bit excessive I feel, but it was going to save us next to nothing to have it left out! Oh well! We haven't been down there since last weekend, and at that stage your block had only just been levelled...so they certainly don't waste their time! We'll be heading down there this weekend to check it out! Hopefully there has been some action on our site as well! Oh and set up a blog or a thread or something will you! Just went out to take a look at my slab. We are happy with it. Had a look over the road from my site but it seems to me that there is two houses being built and not one big one like the guy on the digger told my husband so I guess we will see as it progresses. I started a blog and the address is ourdreamhomemanhattanplace.blogspot.com. I have not put it on with the blogs here yet as I dont know how but I will try to do that next.
