Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 221Sep 18, 2014 3:42 am Delicious! I think we need to talk bars/cellars soon! Congratulations and I vote for blending in roof and trim. http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 222Sep 18, 2014 6:16 am Glad it went well, trixee! And I bet the bubbly was lovely. I haven't a clue re roofs etc - maybe it is a blessing in disguise that we can only choose between about 5 colours! Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 223Sep 18, 2014 10:18 am I did a contrast gutter to tone in with my weatherboard front. I would do it again with a surfmist roof, depending on the brick or render colors, next time I would make it a tone darker, as I went one shade lighter and didn't realise how much the gloss paint "bleached" the colour in full sun! Looking forward to following your journey ![]() Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 224Sep 18, 2014 12:29 pm We've gone for Dune roof and gutters with Surfmist fascia. I don't think gutters are an architectural highlight so I'm not a fan of highlighting them. We've chosen Surfmist as a fascia just to provide a clean break between the roof and walls. There's a home built by Cambuild (a flash custom builder) that I first saw on Houzz that does the different coloured fascia, but they have gone very dark against light coloured roof and walls Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 225Sep 18, 2014 12:36 pm Thanks HBTW, Mal, Trees, and Duke. HBTW - look forward to seeing your cellar! Mal - Sounds like we're in the same boat. Trees - Interesting point about the sun. Our facade faces south-west, so it won't ever get full light unless the sun is directly overhead. All of the sketchup models we've tried seems to put it in the shade the whole time, although in reality when the sun is strong it definitely gets full light. Duke - That's one of my favourite houses, thanks for reminding me of it! Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 226Sep 18, 2014 8:58 pm One of my favourite houses too! Though I'd never noticed the fascia detail. Clever. http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 227Sep 19, 2014 1:47 pm I want to post something interesting, instead I just have a dumb question. Is the fascia normally made of colorbond or wood? And can downpipes be painted to match the render? Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 228Sep 19, 2014 1:51 pm Never a dumb question trixee. Fascia is normally colourbond and yes you can have zincalume downpipes to be painted whatever colour you want. We have both - zinc to be painted where the house is rendered and colourbond where there is facebrick. Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 230Sep 19, 2014 2:03 pm Most builders will paint your down pipes to match the wall they are against ... I say most, because I have some seem that only do one colour around a house regardless. Why oh why?! That is not a dumb question Trixee ... I don't think you would find the question in Building 101 for Dummies, so it doesn't count ![]() Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 231Sep 19, 2014 2:14 pm I wondered that myself and our builders painted the down pipes and our meter box to match. If you're with a custom builder they would certainly do that I think. Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 232Sep 19, 2014 2:18 pm Thanks Marcia. We've seen some strange downpipe colour decisions as well. How about this for another dumb question - is it possible to paint over colourbond? So for example, if you wanted the gutters/fascia to be different to the standard colourbond colours. Or would they then use say zincalume instead of colourbond so they can paint over it? Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 233Sep 19, 2014 2:33 pm ![]() Thanks Marcia. Yep, you can. It takes a few coats and you have to use the right kinda of paint. We've done it here in this house as the gutters and fascias were all faded (the house is 30 yrs old). I personally would see how much it costs to upgrade to a non standard colour - might not be too much and probably easier on your time later down the track. That old saying 'pick your battles' ... I'm a big believer it applies to building too! Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 234Sep 19, 2014 2:44 pm Thanks again Marcia. Yeah I agree with picking your battles, just want to know my options. I've tried googling but I can't seem to find the non-standard colourbond colours, do you know where I might find them? Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 235Sep 19, 2014 2:54 pm They would use zincalume and paint it your chosen colour, same as they do for gutters. Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 236Sep 19, 2014 3:04 pm Thanks Duke! I imagine zincalume is a cheaper material, but would probably work out more expensive due to labour. Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 237Sep 19, 2014 3:05 pm I'd assume the same in terms of cost. Also need to factor in that you'll probably need to re-paint at some stage as I don't think a painted finish would outlast a colorbond finish. Re: Trixee's Passive Solar Build Perth 238Sep 19, 2014 3:06 pm Hm, good point. If maintenance would be an issue, it could be the deciding factor.
