Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 27, 2014 5:33 am I have requested my builder to put in 2 external lights. Nothing fancy. Just a basic bayonet and a standard light in it. I was quoted $170 per point. So the cost for the 2 external lights has come to $340. And given the fact that its just a basic bayonet with a light I feel I'll be getting an electrician later to put in a proper fixture. Does this sound like a reasonable price? Is there a cheaper option that I can opt for so that my initial cost is low and then I can get the electrician to do the work ? I have read many posts talking about Junction boxes and Plug Bases. Is a junction box and plug base the same ? When a plugbase/junctionbox is installed in the roof does it mean that the builder has the wire running from the point in the roof to one of the switches on one of the walls ? If yes, does that mean that when we specify that we want a plugbase or junction box, we need to specify to which switch panel on the wall the wire should run to from that plugbase? And finally if I want to connect external lights can I have this kind of a setup so that its more convenient and cheap to get an electrician to install the external lights later ? I am being charged the same amount ($340) for 2 lights on either side of the garage as well but am inclined to go with the builder for the garage lights since I think there will be a lot of drilling required to get it done on the garage side walls whereas the other external lights will go onto side walls at the rear of the house which already have a cavity and hence it would be easier. Any inputs will be highly appreciated. Re: Future proofing for external lights 2Jul 27, 2014 7:30 am If you're after feature type lighting in the brickwork I'd get them to install the "provision" in the spots you want (not sure if it'd make any difference if it was a junction box or plug base). Alternatively its probably cheaper to have an electrician do it all later and just have the lights installed under the eaves. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Future proofing for external lights 3Jul 27, 2014 8:25 am Hi we have cavity walls, (double brick)single storey, and recently had an additional external light and power point added to an outside wall. The electrician added it to some existing internal wiring that a power point was running from. It didn't seem to be a big issue for him to do so. So as long as you've got some power near by and are going to do the right thing and have a sparky do the work you could probably save some $.
