Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Building a disability/ wheelchair purpose built house 2Jul 20, 2014 12:59 pm Another option, perhaps you can work with a builder to adapt their plan in the necessary ways, e.g. widen hallways and doors, alter bathroom to be wheelchair friendly, flatten entries, etc. my in-laws have worked with builders in Victoria to do this in two homes they've built in Victoria in the last 10 years. Re: Building a disability/ wheelchair purpose built house 3Jul 20, 2014 1:11 pm I had a friend here in Perth who worked with one of the big builders and altered their plans with wider doorways, ramps, bathrooms, lower benches etc. it can be done, you just have to find the right project builder to help. Re: Building a disability/ wheelchair purpose built house 4Jul 20, 2014 1:46 pm There was a recent Grand Designs on ABC (maybe it is still on iview?), where the husband had lost both legs, which may give some design inspiration, especially the design elements in the bathroom. Re: Building a disability/ wheelchair purpose built house 5Jul 20, 2014 2:47 pm Thanks- good to hear that we would be able to adapt plans and work with the builders. I will definitely have a look for that grand designs episode. We have a lot of great ideas from purpose built holiday houses we have stayed at in Victoria and a few of my dad's friends. Bathrooms and outdoor areas are definitely the main issues in my dad's case- but placement of light switches, wider doorways and halls and modified kitchens make it all the more easy for him. No , any draftsman or building designer worth their salt will be able to do this easily and will charge you a lot less. Stewie Re: Building a disability/ wheelchair purpose built house 8Jul 21, 2014 3:54 am Hobless /walk-in showers and wet rooms are becoming a lot more common now as well so bathroom planning might be a bit easier. Allow for wider passageways, turning points and doorways into toilets, bathrooms and bedrooms as well as for a bir or doorway in a walk-in robe. In fact any doorways ( pantry?) Perhaps a bathroom with the toilet in the same room. Allowing for any additional handrails and you can get basins that fit to overhang a cabinet so wheel chair access is easier for someone trying to reach the tap. Consider shower taps being reachable before entering the shower area fully. ( near entry but within the shower rather than under the shower head. ) Go for a fixed plus hand held shower head or just, hand held. And as was said earlier consider switches and wall power points being placed at a better height for access for someone in a wheel chair You could also consider placement of oven and microwave. Eg under bench microwave space and or oven. These are things any volume builder can do easily. We incorporated a few of them without any issues. Re: Building a disability/ wheelchair purpose built house 9Jul 23, 2014 11:33 pm What everyone else said. Our architect automatically incorporates universal design principles in every design, but if you familiarise yourself with the principles other people have mentioned, there's no reason you can't get a volume builder to do it, will end up costing less.
