Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 09, 2014 9:02 pm Well after 18months of searching Mr M and I have found a lovely block of land that settled on Friday. Excited much? I think so!! We have 3.5 acres outside Toowoomba. Even more exciting is that we have signed the initial paperwork to build with Metricon. We have selected the Barkly 29 and are eagerly awaiting the results of our site survey by their engineers. We had our soil test done as part of the contract on our land and it came back as an 'M' (score!) which was very surprising as we were sure we'd end up with a H or H2. We are heading off to Studio M and a few display homes on Saturday to get an idea of what is available and what colours we might like in our new home. Once we get closer to the contract for the house we're going to have lots of work to do in getting quotes for the rest of the property too. We'll be needing a big of fencing done, a shed (with stables for my horses), rural driveway and a few other things as well. Exciting times but lots of work ahead. I am working on starting up a blog to document our build journey - may it be a smooth one! Well done I hope the rest of the process is smooth for you We've had the plan and builder sorted for about 12months, we just needed land to build it on! Our Blog: http://werelivingthedream2.tumblr.com Re: Metricon Barkly 29 - our first home build 7Jul 15, 2014 11:22 am Ok so we made a trip to Studio M on the weekend. Wow - it's mind-blowing the amount of decisions you have to make! We are very sure about the wooden floor we've chosen and we have a basic colour scheme sorted for the house. We know we like the colours together when we look at the samples but it's terrifying wondering if it will all look as nice when it's on the walls/floors/benches! It all seems so very far away and since we signed our first piece of paper with M we've heard nothing and are still waiting for site reports etc to come back. Our consultant said they'd been out to the block but she has no reports back yet and she'll let us know when our contract is ready. I know everyone has to do their jobs and we're not the only people building houses with them but were BUSTING to get this all started. I don't know if you can tell but i'm not all that patient! In the meantime we are sorting out access to our block and getting a driveway. Sorting out our Ergon application for power etc. I hope we'll hear something back soon but otherwise i'll just have to go back to trying to be patient again. Glad to hear you've managed to get yours signed off. It's a pretty big deal! Thanks, considering how rushed we were in choosing it (we had to get back to Studio M as we were eating into our time there) we are very happy that there was one that was exactly what we wanted! She'll be sending it through again on Monday and hopefully this time all our changes will stick! It makes us a little nervous as you wonder what you're actually going to get but we'll have to go over all the plans and elevations again at contract so that will be another opportunity to check it all over again and i'm sure things will go more smoothly this time. We are definitely changing our brick. The more I see existing houses that have the same brick the more I'm sure we need to change it. I know all bricks have some variation between batches but this one seems to range from almost orange to white. If the orange turned up on site for my house i'd have a giant meltdown. We have found a number of houses with a brick I really love and I believe it's in the boral range. We are just waiting on hearing back from the builder of a particular house that we love to see what the brick is that they have used and we will be going with that. It's still a warm cream colour but seems to be much more consistent between houses. It just goes to show that a brick sample/bricks on the wall at the display places look completely different on an actual house. We have our suspicions as to which brick it might be but if it's what we think it is we would NEVER have picked it based on the sample or the wall at the brick display place. Anyway, when I know what it is i'll update here.
