Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 May 30, 2008 3:38 pm Hi
We ahve been told we have to get our downlights installed during construction due to the concrete slab, and we have been quoted about $200 each. This seems crazy to me, anyone 'been there done that' and how much did you pay? Ta Re: Downlights during Construction 2May 30, 2008 3:55 pm Most volume builders seem to charge about $80-$100 per downlight, or $30-50 to install one to install one where they have allowed for a batten point.
How does the slab effect you getting downlights installed??? Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: Downlights during Construction 3May 30, 2008 4:03 pm apparantly because the concrete slab and gyprock only has a space of about a foot so no one can get in there after construction, or it will be very expensive.
something about having to put the canisters in the concrete??? Re: Downlights during Construction 4May 30, 2008 4:14 pm I can't for the life of me work out how lights that go into a ceiling can affect a slab but I do know that $200 per light is way out of line, we were only charged $70 each for any extra downlights or sockets. From what Ive been told its a double brick with a suspended concrete roof on the upper floor and therefore doesnt leave any room for a person to get in the roof space after construction so they tell me we should pout downlights during contruction which are $200 per light. Does that make sense or should I go back to builder? Gem (matts partner) Re: Downlights during Construction 7May 30, 2008 5:12 pm ok, that makes sense!! I guess us Melbournites arent used to a suspensed concrete floor between stories!!!
$200 still seems a lot though to do it during construction! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Ah ha! Now I get it! The canisters are probably some sort of former to create a recess in the concrete for the downlight to sit in. OK different to batten fittings but twice+ the price seems pricey. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Downlights during Construction 11May 30, 2008 11:52 pm i agree
but there is a new law coming through which means they have to put a cone over the light (safety) so it has increased the cost of downlights. our builder told us our house is the last one he is building with downlights and he will be using feature lighting in the future. don't know if i should believe him but yeah ... 200 doesn't sound far off what we are paying anyway.
