Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 25, 2014 3:06 pm Hi Guys, We are few months away from our land registration and will be finalising the builder in coming weeks . I have gained a lot of information from the users here and wanted to put few specific topics like this one. I want to have a Home theatre or Media room in my new home where I will either have 65-70 " TV or a Projector with nice 7.1 speakers and sub, a bit dark carpet and paint. Might choose some down lights. My question is do I need to do anything during the construction to save money later like insulation, darker paint, carpet, downlights, size preferences, location, sound proofing, etc? I don't want it to be too expensive, but want a decent one where we can enjoy movie time with family and friends. If you have already made a media room, I would love to have those pics or experiences shared here. Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 2Jun 25, 2014 4:07 pm G'day, For our theatre room we added sound proofing batons to the walls and a conduit to support the projector and blu-ray wiring. It is much cheaper to do this before the plaster goes on, especially for sound proofing! If you want to mount a TV on the wall, it might be worth asking the builder to add some extra supports behind that wall so it can hold the bracket and TV. Down lights and feature wall we will do after hand over, we found that to be the cheaper option. I hope that helps! Most of the builders don't know anything about the sound proofing. They suggested me to go for insulation on all of its walls how far is your projector from the screen and how big it is? Do you know proximately how much it costs. Did your builder add it your you organised it? I checked your design and it looked great. Can you give me the media room size you have? Do you recon. a particular size for the same? Most of media rooms have a window at the end. They are not that wide to have big screen projector. So will it look good to totally remove the windows, or have small high one and motorised projector screen in front? Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 5Jun 26, 2014 2:48 pm Gaggy, have you had a look at appearance vs cost for projectors vs LCD TV's these days? I haven't particularly seriously looked at projectors, but the ones I've seen at places like the Home Show last weekend look pretty inferior to a 70" or 75" LCD. With respect to extra ... noggins is that the word? ... extra frames for supporting the TV bracket, the carpenter doing our place said that the strength of the standard frame wasn't an issue & the extra woodwork didn't need to go there for strength reasons, but instead so that the mount-points on the TV bracket would be sure to line-up with something solid to screw into. With surround speakers, also have a think about what you'll be getting & whether you might want some solid mount points behind those; or whether they might be inset ones (ie. which are flush-mounted), as that might affect the framework near where those speakers go. Don't forget you also need to get wiring to them somehow. Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 6Jun 26, 2014 8:11 pm with the media room i had cabinets built in during construction and also had the builder wire and install speakers the extra noggins for weight of tv and all the wires need it worked out cheaper then doing it later on. Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 7Jun 26, 2014 8:20 pm Make sure if you have data (cat 5/6) run to the TV so that you can stream from your server or watch Netflix, Hulu etc. BLOG: http://www.ourphoenix38.blogspot.com.au H1 THREAD: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70454 Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 8Jun 26, 2014 9:03 pm Forg Gaggy, have you had a look at appearance vs cost for projectors vs LCD TV's these days? It was a sony around 2kto 2.5k and an attachment in front (forgot the name) of the projector costing aroung 2k as well. If the budget exceeds with 7.1 surround speakers and a decent projector, I might go for a 70" TV. Hi Gaggy, Still haven't picked the projector/screen yet... we might even go TV not too sure. Our contract appointment is only a few months away so we need to decide soon! Cheers Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 13Jun 27, 2014 10:08 am joea Still haven't picked the projector/screen yet... we might even go TV not too sure. Our contract appointment is only a few months away so we need to decide soon! Cheers No problem. You can go to a showroom with different media rooms. I went to Lifestyle showroom and got few ideas about projectors in setting up mine. Few had amazing quality. So if you are tight in budget, then a 70" LED or Plasma would be a good choice, else go for a projector with wide screen. I think I will go first with basic things like sound proofing, carpet, paint, conduit for projector, speaker, wires and outlets in the room, data ports, etc. Later after home is made, then buy the projector or TV. That will depend on how much money is left Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 14Jun 27, 2014 1:06 pm We ran speaker cable inside the walls ready for us to poke a hole in the wall and connect up banana socket plates after hand over. That is nice as well. I hope it wont be that hard to do speaker cabling later. Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 16Jun 28, 2014 6:52 am Be sure to at least install R2.5 audio rated insulation batts in all the walls and ceiling. The rest of the household will thank you for it! A Good read. Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 19Aug 11, 2014 10:05 pm Hi Guys, We have finalised the Harmony Entertainer design from Allworth. Media room is 4.4 * 3.6. I went to a Home theatre specialist in Paramatta and they quoted the following for the basic setup: Prices are retail: Epson TW6100 3D projector - $2,499 Ceiling Mount Projector Bracket - $ 320 100" Premium Fixed Screen with Flock Border- $1,599 Pradigm PV160 In Wall Front Speakers - $ 299 Pradigm PV160 In Wall Centre Speakers - $ 150 Pradigm PV50R Rear Speakers - $ 249 Pradigm PDR80 8" Active Subwoofer s - $ 599 Marantz NR1604 A/V Receiver - $1,080 Ultra Connect 10m HDMI cable - $ 249 Ultra Connect 1.5m HDMI cables * 2 - $ 168 Chord leyline Front & Centre Speaker Cable - $ 126 Custom Installation Rear Speaker cable - $ 139 Ultra Connect 3m Subwoofer Cable - $ 79 Power Extension for the Projector - $ 180 Wall Plates, Fittings & Connections - $ 350 Avico 6 way Power Board - $ 145 System Installation & Calibration - $1,760 System Retail Price - $9,691 Package Price after discount - $6799 ( discount $3170) Problem is high cable cost and installation. They have told us that they can work with the builder and do all the required cabling before media room walls are laid. They will also block the Media room high window. Now I cannot digest the high cost of so called branded cables they use. What suggestion you give where I can get the wiring done and buy things seperately. Is it worth selecting and save all the hastles for fittings? Re: Media Room/ Home Theatre in New Contruction home 20Aug 11, 2014 10:15 pm Those HDMI cables are a straight out rip off. Order your own from eBay for a tenth of the price. Don't listen to any of their BS about quality cables etc. Knockdown and Build - Boutique Homes Airlie 38 10/12/2013 PreWork Contract (PWC) 27/05/2014 Contract 04/07/2014 Site prep 28/07/2014 Slab 30/07/2014 Frame 03/10/2014 Roof 08/12/2014 Lockup Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room.
