"Really? Cool - what is it?" "I'll import it all from factories in China and save a bucket load!" "Don't be stupid. What do you know about importing!" "Oh some guy I met on an Internet forum is going to organise it" "Oh - he's an importer? Who is this guy and what is his importing company" "No he's a DBA! He tells me it will be easy as people do it all the time!" "Oh reeeeeeally. Does this on the side does he?" "No he's never done it before." "You're an idiot. My mother was right - I should never have married you. Come here." *whack* "Why couldn't you just surf the internet for porn like other men. Import from China. Some random forum. Geez." In all seriousness - good luck to you. Hope it works out. Think how many hours you need to invest and apply your hourly rate. The saving versus the opportunity cost, is it still worth it. Whether you pay for the whole container or half will it make that much difference. I am sure you freight forwarding company can advise what solutions are available. Then maybe no need to share with others. No, to research the thing properly and save around 10k is not worth it. It is more about the potential for future business. As I said importing goods while already having a "buyer" (yourself) is much easier then importing to sell for profit. 2014 30/05 $3900 25/08 Contracts 02/10 DA submitted 2015 17/02 DA approved 02/04 Colors 10/04 Demo 09/07 Construction start 27/07 Fill 15/08 Slab 21/09 Frame 2016 08/01 Bricks Re: Those building or renovating: share a container from Chi 44Jun 16, 2014 10:03 pm Confused, is it worth it personally?? No according to your answer. Then you mention importing with a buyer in mind. So you intend to profit. Very confusing. If it is simply to reduce shipping then you don't need other people. Just makes logistics more challenging and risks higher. Re: Those building or renovating: share a container from Chi 45Jun 16, 2014 10:30 pm I work for a company that imports it's entire product line from china & Singapore. My bosses spend months on end visiting overseas suppliers making sure their product & standards are high. We constantly get companies send us samples - which look fantastic (because they don't send bad quality samples), you order a whole container of said item, and it turns up completely different/poor quality/different finish etc. there's very little recourse. It ends up costing you more money than it's worth. A lot of the time these "factories" that have given you an awesome deal/signed a contract/made the promises are no more than a dark and gloomy shed in a back alleyway. We often get builders/DIYers etc who like you, buy a container of say, glass, or steel, because it's 1/3 of the price and "the same" item as we have. Often the entire container is unusable, poor quality, doesn't meet our building codes etc. they the have to buy the entire lot again locally, from a supplier like us. As they say, "buy cheap, buy twice". I'm not saying this will happen to you, but it happens SO often in my line or work. The people that import things for a living have done their research, travelled etc...and even get get ******* batches of product out of china.
