Browse Forums Building A New House Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 21Jun 06, 2014 2:43 pm Well we met with the SS today and the state manager. They were both very good and listened to our concerns over not only the visual appeal (or unappeal) of the alfresco but the safety issue as well. But apparently it is meant to look like that and their display homes all look like this too. However as of recently they no longer do the "termite barrier" around the alfresco (Im gathering because so many other unhappy customers thought it looked crap too). So I am hoping they will come to the table and help us out in funding some way we can conceal that ugly concrete border. Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 22Jun 06, 2014 6:44 pm I just double checked my Coral quote and it states: "Note: Includes physical terminate barrier system between main house slab and integrated slab in lieu of standard termite visual barrier. Standard termite visual barrier still applies to remainder of house." Check you tender/contract and see what is written under the slab description. Otherwise, as previously mentioned you probably have two things you can do: Tile over it or cut it out. Tiling is obviously easier and shouldn't cost much at all. Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 23Jun 12, 2014 3:33 pm Hi, we built with Coral too (in Sydney) and the look of your slab caught my eye. In case it's useful, here's how our Alfresco slab looks in relation to the termite strip... http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag125/ThatTime2/Post%20Build/Alfresco-Rear_zps3ef79f72.jpg http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag125/ThatTime2/Post%20Build/Alfresco-Front_zpsc6d62f2a.jpg We're different but I don't think there's anything wrong with your slab layout. If anything your slab brings the floor level of the Alfresco up closer to the house level, which is good for tiles. Ours is lower, which is good for timber decking... and I'll get around to installing it soon. I'm not a tradie. To my unprofessional eye the only problem here is the tiles - (as you know) they should go to the edge of the Alfresco slab. I think there's too much confusion about what these termite strips actually do. The better name I've heard for them is a Termite Inspection Strip. The logic of them is they don't stop termites trying to get into your house, but they make the attempt obvious. Apparently termites will build a mud tunnel across that concrete strip to get to the house, and that's what you should keep an eye out for while you are enjoying the space around the house (i.e. mowing). To that logic it shouldn't matter if your inspection strip is made of concrete, tiles or paper mache. The termites still have to build their entrance and you can still spot it. The argument that they can't tile over the strip because it's somehow a magic strip that can't be covered is void. My Build Thread: Coral Homes Noosa 279 Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 24Jun 12, 2014 7:04 pm Was at a display home last weekend. This is what it is meant to look like (for tiling). Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 26Dec 18, 2014 9:34 pm That doesn't look completed i wouldn't be happy with that for the finish, it looks like Coral Homes have done the slab to big and didn't want to cut more tiles to make them go to the edge of the slab i would honestly tell them you want it fixed definitely danger zone for all family members you are the paying customer and the one that has to live with it NOT them!!!!!
