Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 05, 2014 3:52 pm We are close to completing our build with Coral Homes. We had huge dramas with all of the tiling, but my biggest issue is with the alfresco tiling. It doesn't go all the way to the edge, it stops short with an edge of concrete slab. See pics. Coral claim this is their standard and it is a "termite barrier." I don't care about termites. My issue is it looks dangerous. The tiles are sharp and easy to catch your toe on. It looks awful too. Any thoughts or advice? Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 2Jun 05, 2014 4:54 pm Huh? Termites? I thought termites liked wood? What's the difference between a tiled edge and concrete edge? Do termites fancy tiles? *confused Either way I wouldn't be happy with that. Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 3Jun 05, 2014 5:01 pm Yeah I dont know about that... I mean, it looks neat..But I've never seen it like that before? My guess is they just couldn't be bothered to cut some tiles! Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 4Jun 05, 2014 6:17 pm I'm not a tiler- so can really only offer an amateur opinion but my expectations for a professional job would be to cut tiles to fit in such a way that there are trimmed tiles are on the edges of the alfresco that contacts the house, so then the full size tiles then reach the edge of the alfresco? However, your alfresco slab sticks out a bit- is it like that on the plans? Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 5Jun 05, 2014 6:58 pm The plans show the tile going right to the edge. But the SS and the Area manager swear that it is mean to look this way. The tiler has begun from the outside and worked his way inwards. Its all very odd. Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 6Jun 05, 2014 7:01 pm Apparently (tradie boyfriends opinion) that the edges of the brick pillars are to line up with the slab. So the slab is out too far. I guess if you think about it it would look just as strange to tile all the way around the brick pillars too... But yeah really strange Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 7Jun 05, 2014 7:19 pm Ask to see the other houses were this is done as standard. It looks to me they made a mistake with the slab, IMO it should finish flush with the outside of the pier and the tiles finish on the edge. Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 8Jun 05, 2014 7:25 pm That doesn't look right to me either What does it look like it the display home? Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 9Jun 05, 2014 7:32 pm They are saying the display homes look like that too. But even if this is the standard, I'm not happy with it. It looks unfinished and I'm worried my little kids are going to trip and hurt themselves. We meet with the SS tomorrow to discuss. I haven't come across anyone who thinks it looks good or finished correctly. Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 10Jun 05, 2014 7:40 pm I certainly wouldn't be happy either. Seems they've either made the slab to big or put the brick pillars in the wrong place. Termite barrier sounds like rubbish. Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 11Jun 05, 2014 7:43 pm It's hard to tell from the small photo's but the termite barrier should be the same height right around the house, but on your third picture it seems to stop at the bricks? or it has been raised for the alfresco area. Something isn't right. The Coral display homes i have been to have the tiling going to the edge, AND there is a piece of strip steel to make it look flush (this might not be standard though!) Suggest you go to your nearest display house and take photos. My Noosa 23 Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72782 Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 12Jun 05, 2014 7:47 pm I've seen a few display homes and friend's newly built homes that have a tiled alfreso, none of which have the tiles finishing before the slab ends.
As mentioned above, I think it's either the slab is too big... which should mean that it is too big along that whole line of the house border or the pillars are in the wrong place. Hope you get it sorted! Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 13Jun 05, 2014 7:53 pm Yes, whzzz28 - My DH seems to think they have poured the slab wrong too. The termite barrier steps up to floor level of the alfresco, so it is not on the same level all the way around the house. If it did continue on the same level and the tiles finished flush and then stepped down to the termite barrier, it wouldn't look so bad IMO. Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 14Jun 05, 2014 7:57 pm We figured it out. They've done it wrong, hard to explain in words but the measurement for the slab has been done incorrectly. looks like the 100mm trick to us! Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 16Jun 05, 2014 8:00 pm Are you saying they have poured it out too far by 100mm LaceyM? Whatever they have done, I am stumped on how it can be fixed. I'm so bummed Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 18Jun 05, 2014 8:08 pm you can take a demo saw to it but of course you wont be doing that because its not your responsibility! but I reckon you should find a local concreter, call and ask the question. Get a qualified third parties opinion and then take it to them and demand it to be fixed! cause it certainly isn't right... unless its some totally new concept weve never ever seen before Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 19Jun 05, 2014 8:11 pm Its not a hard fix, so don't stress. The only tricky part I can think of is to make sure not too much stress is put on the surface to accidentally crack a tile. But you tell them your tradie friends know its wrong! And if you still have payments, withhold them til its repaired. Re: HELP! Does this alfresco tiling look right to you?Coral 20Jun 05, 2014 8:13 pm OR ask them to tile it... that would be the easier solution! But make sure you stand your ground and tell them you hate it haha They using concrete or timber sleepers? Timber or steel uprights?
