Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Nbn/fibre optic what's the difference! 22Jun 08, 2014 11:52 pm worktime Whilst both houses get the same speeds now (100mbps max), in 1-2 years, Gigabit plans will be availble for NBN customers, while the neighbour will be stuck on 100mpbs max. AFAIK, as of end of 2013 NBN released a 1Gbps plan, I believe it is up to the RSP to actually make it available though. (An RSP is the people that actually provide your internet - so, Optus, iiNet, AAPT, Bigpond, TPG, etc are all RSPs, a fibre provider runs the fibre to connect you to your RSP of choice, the government mandates that they can not lock you into one RSP only) So far I've heard of the following fibre providers in various estates; Opticomm - Limited RSPs and apparently quite draconian pricing, Also provide TV services Places Victoria - It seems this may be very similar to Opticomm, also provide TV services Telstra Velocity - Telstra (wholesale), but a reasonable selection of different RSPs, they also provide TV across the fibre links, priced almost identical to NBN Co NBN Co - The government provider of last resort, basically, if no one else goes in NBN will have to provide service, doesn't offer TV, but that doesn't mean an RSP can't offer TV services either. Has the greatest selection of RSPs Sadly, you won't get to choose who your developer has chosen to provide service, one thing you CAN be sure of however is that ALL new estates will get a fibre service. You'll need to check with your estate developer to see what is being provided at each release, and it can change between releases. It is best to not assume. Nbn/fibre optic what's the difference! 23Jun 10, 2014 7:57 am Question: My developer is offering Telstra Velocity, and states that FTA TV and Foxtel are also available over the fibre service. Now, does anyone know if this Foxtel would be delivered via Telstra, or Foxtel? Or is it specific to my developer? (Not sure if this is a generic package, or developer specific). Opticomm's list of RSP's is slowly increasing. Albeit not at the same rate/level as nbn providers. Most of the providers have the same price tiering as nbn plans. Opticomm connection fee's are currently priced at $330. The velocity package delivering TV via fibre is standard for Telstra Velocity. Foxtel will be delivering your service over the Telstra fibre, I guess you could say its being delivered via Telstra. You'll find there are some pretty big advantages to using your data links like this - primarily when it comes to reliability. Of course, this will mean a portion of available bandwidth is dedicated to TV and cannot be used for generic data, its all a bit of a trade off and at the speeds we are talking, it's still vastly better than pretty much anything else.
