Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 03, 2014 2:01 pm Hello fellow South Aussies where are you? The The previous 'Building in SA' thread hasn't been touched for two years. Am I missing it appearing elsewhere?
Do you mind sharing here who you're building with and where and what stage you are at? If you have your own thread, Please give me a link ... I want to follow your experience. 'We' have a block at Golden Grove. Engaged our builder late 2012 but they went belly up sadly. We are now choosing between two. Will let you know when decided (if there is interest) Re: South Australia builds 2014 2Jun 03, 2014 2:05 pm What a great idea! Very hard to track all the SA builds (or any state for that matter) things get so lost in the thread... Happy to share and kick it off: We are building the Simonds Sierra in Bluestone Estate, Mount Barker We started on site 3/6/14 - have just had the site cut, scraped and leveled. We're building with Adelaide Designer Homes in Northfield. Have just finished framing stage, and are impatiently waiting for our roof to go on. Our thread is at: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70532 Re: South Australia builds 2014 8Jun 04, 2014 8:39 am It pays to invest the time into reviewing the forums and blogs. For example, I saved $5k through a tip on the forums. Our facade is going to be rendered and the builder was going to charge us for bricks and render. I read about Hebel and render on the forums and then did my own research. After speaking with the builder, we changed to Hebel and render and the cost reduced from $8k to $3k. We are building with Homestead Homes in Hallett Cove. 2nd time round for us, built also in Hallett Cove 4 years ago, also with Homestead Homes. Our site has just had initial prep done, so not long until our footings etc will begin. Haven't started our own thread, might do so once things start progressing a little more. Re: South Australia builds 2014 10Jun 05, 2014 12:27 am danandmel We are building with Homestead Homes in Hallett Cove. 2nd time round for us, built also in Hallett Cove 4 years ago, also with Homestead Homes. We currently live at Somerton Pk and are moving to Golden Grove ... HUGE change! We looked at some land at Hallet Cove about 20 years ago 'The Bluff' and it was on a bluff, great spot but real windy. You must have the last bit of land left in HC. I love it here (since 1990) but time for a change and GG is nice. Never liked this house but we were lucky we bought it when we did. There was nothing around at the time or way out of reach. We came 'cashed up' from Sydney. LOL ... Average (ugly) houses in my old (working class) Sydney suburb are now around $1.5m. Everything here is cheap compared to Sydney! Re: South Australia builds 2014 11Jun 05, 2014 12:13 pm Hi everyone! Great idea TomCat to start SA thread. I am building modified Greenock with Statesman Homes at Elizabeth Park. We hade release to construction on 7 March, slab was poured down on 25 March and at the moment we have the roof almost completed. Electricians are already booked for the first fix on 13 May and hopefully brick layers will be there soon too. My thread is in my signature First house - Statesman Greenock (modified) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=66876 Second house - Fairmont Grand Design (modified) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=100789 Re: South Australia builds 2014 12Jun 05, 2014 3:05 pm Building a slightly modified Fremantle with Fairmont homes. Just got my unconditional loan approval (which was the last thing we had been waiting on), which means hopefully in 3 - 6 weeks I should see site works happening Link - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=68570 (Haven't updated since selections) Re: South Australia builds 2014 13Jun 26, 2014 10:11 pm We're tossing up between the Metricon Elysian

I would say it will come down to the package you would be able to get from the builders that will make your choice. I must admit I am biased to Simonds, only because of the great experience I am having and the not so great M experience our friends up the street are having in comparison. (Service wise) BUT like anything, it's different for everyone Pros and Cons, do a list... weigh it up and if after that you still aren't sure, go with the gut feel. Put a deposit down this afternoon. Seriously, their sales executive is super professional (efficient/knowledgable/helpful) and so likeable. Re: South Australia builds 2014 17Jun 28, 2014 7:51 am Thanks for starting the thread @TomCat We've had concept architecture plans drawn up and sent to council. We aren't going through a builder but someone I'm calling a building broker. Moved to Dernancourt from a generous Ian Wood home in Northgate. Will start a thread and post the link. It would be good @TomCat if you could paste the links into your first post (could end up being a lot of work). What sort of issues are the having with M? Pretty much a talk to the hand kind "not our issue" kind of attitude. Plus they've had various little mistakes and issues crop up since signing and aren't getting much love. They're at their wits end. They signed in May 2013 with M and settled their land 3 weeks before us. We didn't sign with Simonds till November and we're at frame stage. Its just more related to the service and the way they said that everything seems to be a battle, we really feel for them. But I know people who have had a great M experience, so again, its all so relative to your own situation. I can only go on our experience with Simonds so far and in comparison to the last build and other builds we've known about, we just cannot fault them for both the sales experience (Haydn was not only friendly, he was diligent and got everything right so contract stage wasn't a nightmare) and the administration team just were no mess, no fuss. Right the first time. And delightful and friendly to deal with. Congrats Tom Cat, the Avalon is just lovely! I hope you're Simonds experience is as good as ours has been thus far Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=66299 Slab: 16/6/14 Frame: 4/7/14 Roof: 22/7/14 Lock Up: 20/8/14 Fixing: 26/8/14 PCI: 9/10/14 Handover: 20/10/14 Re: South Australia builds 2014 20Jun 28, 2014 9:13 pm deluxes Just not communicating, failing to assist or refusing to even talk with their pool builder to advise of what the slab height will be... I hope you're Simonds experience is as good as ours has been thus far Great that you are having such a good experience. We have been happy with M so far. That comes with the caveat that we had to speak up a few times to get a resolution. I think if you let them go with little oversight your project doesn't get much attention. We have to escalate issues twice now and it's only then that our problem is resolved.
