Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 20, 2014 12:09 am Need help from the brains trust I am getting a last chance to review the drawings before it gets submitted for certification and noticed a few new bits... one of which is the light switch plate. It states "Light switch plate height to be same height as door handle (1020mm from finished floor level)" Is this normal? It seems a bit low to me? TIA Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 2May 20, 2014 12:11 am Definitely seems low. 1200mm seems to be the standard. Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 4May 20, 2014 8:39 am Thanks asha. The door handle height sounds about right... Does anyone else have an opinion the right height for a light switch? Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 6May 20, 2014 10:34 am Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 7May 20, 2014 11:08 am Hmm no idea what the standard is and personally I wouldn't worry about it.
If I were you, I'd walk around your current house and measure where the light switches are. Think about if that placement is adequate for your needs, or if you would benefit from it being higher/lower than its current position. The decide for the new house accordingly! Nothing like real world application to decide if something is a good idea. 2D plans are somewhat lacking in this department. That's my two cents. Good luck choosing! Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 8May 20, 2014 11:09 am I thought it low, but I just glanced around and that's the height light switches are in my house. Works ok - reachable for the kids, although that is a mixed blessing! Land settled May '14. Blog: http://jyndeira.net/blog/ Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 9May 20, 2014 11:28 am FWIW, in the current house we're renting until we get our new one built, the light switches are at 1240mm to the centre of the switch. The lower powerpoints are at 250mm above the floor. The house was built in around 1980, so things have certainly changed since then. 1020mm seems to be a little low to me. On a sample electrical plan, I found the following levels for GPO's (powerpoints) :- 200, 1050, 1200, 1600, 2000, 2200, and ceiling mounted. Of course if you put it in the plan you want your switches/gpo's at say 750mm, then they'll put them there, no matter how odd they might look. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 10May 20, 2014 11:54 am Thanks everyone I'm living at my in laws and they have super high ones so it's hard to judge but I would have thought between my standing elbow and shoulder height would make more sense... It seems strange they highlighted (well sorta!) the height of the light plates. I think I'll go with 1200 or 1300 and ask the CSO. Thanks again! Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 11May 20, 2014 12:17 pm The answer is - have them at whatever height suits you! If you'd like them higher than door handle height then tell the builder what height you want them at. Their draftie has just placed them at a standard height that they normally use. Close your eyes, and reach out to a wall at a height you'd expect a switch at. Measure it. Whatever feels normal to you is going to be easiest to locate in the dark. It'll make no difference to the builder, it's just a matter of notating it correctly on the drawings per your requirements. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 12May 20, 2014 9:51 pm I'm an electrician myself and the usual for a domestic situation seems to be About 1300mm and I also do a lot lf nursing homes where the maximum is 1000mm But it really is whatever you choose and also to accommodate the people living In the house (elderly, children etc) Hope that helps! Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 13May 25, 2014 11:50 am Just reading this I looked over at my bedroom door handle ( app 900) and to have the switch at that height I think would look really weird. I measured my house ( built 4yrs ago) and the switches are all at 1300. Last week we went into a display home to get some ideas about our new home and I remember saying those light switches look out of place cause they were so low. Re: Light Switch Height? 1020? 14May 25, 2014 7:25 pm Just went out to our new house, and the noggins in the wall are right around the 1150 to 1250 mark, so we are going to have to put them down at 1050mm high. Went around the corner to another build, only to find their frame has the noggins much higher, so 1200mm for the light switches. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld.
